Amazing Race On CBS

Fri Oct 18, 2002 1:01 pm

Hey All-
Did anyone else catch The Amazing Race on CBS last night. The Contestants spent a good portion of the show having to get from Cancun to London. They seemed to do a pretty good job exploring a number of avenues to do it. Pretty much all of them went to Mexico City First, a few then went direct on British Airways to London, or connected through Miami on American or through Paris.

That was probably the only time they used their brains! Come on, other times, they took forever! To me it seems, all they did was finding direct flights! Surely, can't they find transit flights, with a longer departure time, but departed way earlier?

But at least they are better than the contestants in the first race..... Gosh! Bangkok to Beijing, they waited a whole day to take a direct flight! Can't they just go through Hong Kong, where there are almost 20 flights Bangkok-HKG, and 20 HKG-Beijing?????? Geez!

One of the many great things about the show is when we see the contestants go get their tickets.

I, too, enjoy the show. Any idea how they actually pay for the tickets?

Interesting the other night how one team booked straight through: CUN-MEX-CDG_LHR via Aeromexico/Air France. Others waited until they got to MEX to look into Europe-bound flights. Those of us on this forum would have done what this team did: take advantage of the SkyTeam Alliance.

The smart thing to do would have been taking CUN-MIA-LHR on AA or AA/BA. I love how everybody was going to MEX thinking thier would be plenty of non-stops to LHR (BA is only 4x weekly). Everyone ended up going either CUN-MEX-CDG-LHR on AeroMexico/Air France or CUN-MEX-MIA-LHR on AM or MX/AA/AA or BA.

No, they were REQUIRED to go to MEX. The rules stated so, as I recall.

By the way, the team that ended up waiting for BA finished last.

I'm pretty sure the show provides them with credit cards to book their plane tickets, otherwise they only have a set amount of cash to spend. I can't imagine what the walk up fare on a CUN-MEX-CDG-LHR one way goes for.

I love to watch that show mainly to watch the teams at the airport runing around looking for flights for their destinations. The teams that flew club world on the BA MIA-LHR flight were extremely lucky and BA was very nice to them .And it was a requisite for them to fly to MEX first- it was very stupid because they would have gotten to London faster if they would have flown nonstop from CUN to MIA instead of having to go through MEX.

I love this show!

My wife and I watch it weekly. I especially love watching everyone panic at the airports. I have a feeling that everyone on A.net who watches the show has an ideal plan and most of the major airlines' schedule and routes already in mind, but all that knowledge may not always benefit us "geeks." That's because it just seems that each "ideal" direct flight to the destination is either booked up or for some phony reason, they cannot get on the flight. Being the "A.netter" that I am, I tend to think I would excel at booking and scheduling at the airports.

May be I should just apply for The Amazing Race next year just to fly 'round the world. I know you guys would support me!

I love that show too. From what I see, I think the producers of the show block certain numbers of seats on each flight or bus that they know the teams will have to travel on.

It's amazing how every flight seems to be able to accommodate only 3-4 teams and the others have to wait for the next flight. Same applies for the bus rides that they had to take. Limiting the number of teams on the first flight/bus seems to happen alot in the new season.

A similar thread was posted a few weeks ago...I will ask the same question I asked in that thread....

"Anyone knows which countries they will be visiting this season?" or rather "which part of Asia will they be going to this time round. I heard rumours that Singapore will be one of their pit stops...anyone can confirm this"?

So far it's MIA, MEX, LHR....fill in the blanks....

A friend of mine pretty much confirmed that they are coming to Singapore 'cos he knows someone who works in the place where the contestants had to go to. Hell I can't wait for that episode but it's probably going to be somewhere nearer the end of the race.

But hell, the Amazing Race is probably the most fantastic show I've seen in ages. From the very first series up until now, the show is just soooo addictive. I'm putting my money on the twins this time round, don't know why the others seem to hate them so much. Can't stand the Aaron and Arriane pair, they're so evil hahaha.

The Twins!! Somehow I am not too sure about them....don't seem to be very bright IMO. Look at how badly they almost screwed up in the first episode that they had to use the fast forward so soon. Based on the last 2 seasons, the winners were those who utilised their FF near the end. Have not identified any potential winners yet. Wanna place bets after half the teams are out?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Asia has always been their last leg before they return to the US for the final show down.

Docpepz...so where did they go in Singapore, tell leh...?  Big grin

Apparently the twins made it to Singapore. When they were here I think they went to the zoo...... But don't fault me if it's not true! Seriously I wonder what they could possibly have done here. Since everywhere is so easy to get to, it's so small and organised, and everyone speaks English. (Unless they happened to bump into 70 year old grandmas everywhere they went, but I don't think so)

They should have gone to Joo Chiat residential area to watch the most amazing show in Singapore.... better than watching Survivor... outwit, outplay, out-dance....

LOL! Finally, they show something newer than the rest of the world (except US) in New Zealand! Docpepz, sorry to burst your bubble for the twins, but they only made it to Nambia. To further ruin your show, let me inform you that they had a bad run of luck, and took forever trying to find a sand dune.......

I think they went to Hong Kong too. I recognise the big gold buddha statue in their opening scene. Or do they have one somewhere else?????

Jesseycy:

wow you have 'inside sources' too. I don't think they could have gone to Hong Kong since they went there in the last season and i don't think they go to the same place twice.

We get the amazing race here 3 hours after the US Pacific gets it so i think it's pretty updated! So, did you watch them get to Namibia?

Actually, SQ772, in the first season of the show, there was also this pair of guys I think their names were Drew and Brennan (who incidentally also won the race in the end), who used the fast forward in the first epsiode. Simply goes to show that it is actually possible to use the fast forward in the first few episodes and still win the game.

Sand dune? Erm.. from my vague recollections of the last season, there was this particular episode where teams actually had to look for this sand dune and this pair of Afro-American twins actually got elimnated because they couldn't find the dune or was it because their vehicle got stuck in the sand or something. Are you referring to the last season Jesseycy?

Yes i think jesseycy is referring to the last season. THere's no way New Zealand gets The Amazing Race III ahead of the USA!

Don't forget, there's actually two teams of Twins. There's the two who actually look alike (The Doublmint Twins) and there's that other team where the one brother is gay and the other one is straight.

Re: booking flights - according to the rules the teams actually have to book four seats on a flight. Two for them and two for their camera crew. If there's only two seats left on a flight, the team can't go.

I love this show, too. My friends have been threatened with death if they try to call me while its on. I like seeing the insides of airports around the world. I recognized CUN from when I was there 12 years ago.

I like the Amazing Race, too. But the only thing that bothers me is what the teams must get away with by having an American network cameraman following them around! For example, in the last season, the two guys from Miami slept in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton in Hong Kong and then were chauffer-driven to the airport by the travel agency they used. Come on! If they didn't have the cameraman in tow, they would have gotten away with none of that. As well, the two couples that flew business class from Miami to LHR were obviously the beneficiaries of a "star-struck" ticket agent who wanted to make a good public impression for BA. The twins should never have seen their luggage again after they were stupid enough to leave it in a cab in Mexico City. The only reason the guy came back was because his cab and face had been videotaped!

Hey all,
I love this show too! It's one of the only shows I make a point of catching every week. I missed last weeks though.  Crying I heard that they drove around in some tanks or something.
I agree! The airport scenes are awesome. I do think it's kind of hilarious how the program shows the wrong aircraft for the flight they were supposedly on. Like using a 737 to fly across the Pacific (example).  Nuts

I didn't know that they used 2 camera men. I sure wouldn't mind that job!

Well, have fun.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
