SAA Fuselage Livery Design. Time For An Upgrade?

Fri Oct 18, 2002 4:29 pm

South African has one of world's best and most beautiful tailfin designs ever. The fuselage design however is just plain white and is not at all an extension of the tailfin design. A while ago RyeFly and undersigned unveiled some own free inspirations. Should SAA concider an upgrading for its fuselage livery design? And how would you like to see this upgrading?

About the tailfin design: will the design be stronger in case the golden sun will be deleted? Which added value has this sun-symbol?

I think the sun is called horizon mark, it has some meaning.
I don't think there should be too much color on the fuselage as the tail is already so colorful. A nice touch are the painted winglets.

I doubt that it will change soon, afterall the new scheme was only introduced in about 1997 or thereabouts.

I personally think it looks fine the way it is: If it ain't broke, don't try fix it!!!

There are a lot of horrible liveries out there...many will agree.
SAA is NOT one of them....some will agree
Pick an ugly one and make it better.....

Why mess with something as beautiful as SAA's livery? It is perhaps the best "euro-white" livery out there...

Don't change it! The fuselage may be a little (or very) Euro-white, but the tail compensates for it & makes it look awesome!

Well, actually, the SAA livery might be improved....I don't like the fuselage being so white....yes, the tail is nice, but the fuselage could also reflect the quality of the tail.

Air Orange, judging by your aircraft livery designs so far, you don't need help!

If I ever buy an aircraft and need it painted...you're hired!

Nononononono! Of course they don't. That livery is possibly one of the best out there. The white fuselage helps lighten the image of the aircraft which has a lot on the tail.

That livery(along with a few others) needs absolutely nothing done to it.

In my oppinion there is no need for a repaint. A white fuesalge doesn't mean it's a blank canvas to be painted!!!
OK; there are many persons out there that hate the euro-white c/s, but see it as a whole, won't any fusealge design heavily distract attention from the beautifull tail-design??

Okay, I made inventory of your comments, thanks.

I still cannot imagine that a complete white fuselage is THE best solution (for any airline: Air France could have more too). Although it looks very neat the fuselage could have slightly more without getting a muddy/sticky/heavy/average livery. EVA Air proved how to break a white fuselage. I see the SAA planes as white tubes with a tail sticked on it; neat but the tail and fuselage are not a unity.

I love the lettering on the fuselage, it just looks really good. However, I miss the springbok on the tail, that was really classic. However, I believe that has some racial overtones, does it not? I think the tail looked cool, in 1995. They ought to just introduce a very simple flag tail. I dont mind white fuselages, and the lettering is just large enough, to where it offsets the whiteness.
