Flight Tracking Question

Sun Oct 20, 2002 1:39 am

OK, I'm new to this whole flight tracking stuff...I have a question: What site can I use to track a flight (w/ a limited amt. of info.) that is not currently in progress? Isn't there a site that I can determine the route, reg. #, and additional info? Example: I live in SF and pass SFO everyday on my commute. On the way home heading north on 101, I usually pass SFO at about 6:30 pm and I always catch a glimpse of an AF 747 on taxi to departure. How can I track it's reg # and destination? Just curious to find out where it's coming from and where it will be tomorrow, and where the one that I will see tomorrow is now...you know, geeky info. like that....Thanks for any help. PM

I use Flight Explorer Personal Edition http://www.fepersonal.com but a flight has to be in progress to get any info on it, and only the professional edition will do routing. Perhaps someone else has info on how to get info on proposed or planned flights.

Go to www.fboweb.com

Subscribe to the flight tracking there. It is unlimited for $9.95 a month, you can even get the actual flight plans from there as well, included.

Am I correct in deducing these two examples seem to focus primarily on North American air space?

AW, you will not find a personal use flight tracking program to scan the rest of the world. That costs thousands of dollars. Some trackers right now show airplanes over oceans and stuff, but doesn't give any details once out of range.

You can only find US/Canada Trackers

I believe so, I've tried both of them and they offer domestic traffic info; perhaps I can access intl' info by acquiring a membership...

The service level on a lot of these sites about about to go way down.

Because of some paranoia by officials in the FAA about terrorists starting in about a month the flight data is going to get about a 5 minute delay for users would in the Feds minds don't have a reason for needed direct up to the minute data.

I work for an airline that uses one of these services to coordinate incoming medevac flights with ambulace transporters and we have to apply to get the actually non-tampered/non-delayed flight data for our own aircraft.

This whole paranoia thing going around is pretty stupid.

This paranoia IS quite stupid alright.

Flytecomm disabled its FlyteTrax program because of this whole FAA and Terrorist jitters. I had a blast using FlyteTrax as It was very interesting to see the planes flying over my city and to compare the amount of traffic Canada has compared to the US.. LAUGHABLE!!!  Smile

Flytetrax was an excellent program offering updates every 1 minute to all traffic in Norh america. It also showed routing and sattelite imagery of Weather patterns over this continent.

I hope Flytecomm can someday renable its service.

FlyteTrax is the system that we are using at work.

They claim the change is because of a FAA mandate  Pissed

They will have two classes of users, the Class 1 which will be everybody that can get FAA approval to receive real time flight information. Like I said, we are trying to get that since we rely on this program to keep track of our medivac flights and coordinate when the ambulance should be at the airport to meet the aircraft.

The Class 2 user will supposedly be everybody that can't get approved for class one service, supposedly the data block will have accurate information but the display will be 5 minutes behind.

But judging from the reliability of the information given in the data block this is unacceptable reliability for flight tracking use. Quite often I have seen bad numbers or numbers that don't make a lot of sense, If the aircraft is displayed in the correct place at least I can make an estimate of it's arrival.

Oh, time to go back to using a stopwatch to follow flights.
