Upper Deck Door On The B742

Sun Oct 20, 2002 9:59 am

Looking through pictures of 742's in the database I noticed they seemed to have a wide variety of combinations involving the Upper Deck door. Some had 1 door on the right. Some had 1 door on the left and some had 1 door on the right and left. Is this another case of the airlines choosing the configuration that suits them or is there something else to it?

Maybe it's just me, but when I lined up all the photos next to each other, the door looked the same on all of them... I guess I don't see how you mean the door is different.

Dear Mr AirNZ -
xxx
Upper deck doors 747-200 are as follows... standard door is the RH door, and the option is a second door on the LH side...
xxx
This came about in around 1973... the upper deck was limited to 19 seats, and in order to increase the occupancy of the upped deck, the second door on the LH side was installed to permit a capacity of 32 seats... it could be found on some 200Bs, 200Cs, 200Fs, and even some SPs...
xxx
By the way it is either a door on the RH side, or both sides... there is no plane with a door on the LH side only...  Wink/being sarcastic
xxx
Some examples of 2 door aircraft are 747-271C, 245F, 249F, some 228B Combis, the 21ACs, and the SP38...

Happy contrails -
