Sun Oct 20, 2002 12:11 pm

Just out of curiousity.. Does TAP have any A330's or have they ordered any? I checked their site and looked at their fleet, wasnt there.. I dont know if there is a need for TAP to get the A330. But Id sure like to see them complete thier collection of Airbusses Big grin

TAP has an all-Airbus fleet with the 343, 313, 321/320/319, but no 332/333 equipment (yet). It seems reasonable in due course that when the 313 is replaced, the 332 will be a likely candidate.

I think so too. A lot of airlines that have operated the A310 have replaced it with the A330-200, it is the ideal A310 replacement. With TAP's Airbus fleet of A340, A310, A319/320/321 aircraft, I wouldn't be surprised to see the A330 phased in. TAP will then have an all-Airbus fleet of A319/320/321, A330 and A340 aircraft, all those Airbus models share a lot of commonality in pilot training and spare parts. The B737's are gone.

What I actually heard is that they want to replace the A340's with A330's. I would assume that they would replace both the A310's and A340's with the A330's and use A321's on A310 flights too.

Hi!

Before the 11/09 2001 TAP was thinking the possibility of not only replacing the A310-300's but also because the A340-300 was too big for their network it would be replaced too by a single long-haul model, the A330-200. It would fit greatly in TAP network and was also when TAP was in ready to be partly sold to Swissair ( I think actually Swissair did ordered 6 A330-200's for members of their group including TAP ). Now everything is postponed and I know that the leasing of the A310-300's was reforced for another 2 or 3 years.
We'll have to wait a while also because TAP is in process of beeing privatized and this could re-direct all the strategy of TAP.

Wow, good stuff. I kinda figured the A310's would need replacing, but I never made the connection that the A330 would be the replacement. And as for favoring the A330 over the A340.. that would be interesting. Has that been done before??

I'm sure Airbus would offer TAP a deal on new 332/333 equipment to roll over the 313/343 fleet. The used 313/343 can relatively easily be placed. TAP also has a good mx reputation which would boost the used value.

TAP would gain operational benefits from standardizing on one widebody type. The 332 could easily handle their longest routes from LIS to Johannesburg & Rio. The 333 could be utilized for the heavier JFK/EWR routes. Macao has since been dropped so the 343 range is not needed.

I agree completely. It makes complete sense. Im really glad I chose to major in Aviation, hehe. I love the strategy involved with airline fleets. It would also be eaiser to train new pilots im guessing? Airbusses have mainly similar flight decks and systems, but to me the A310 seems like the odd duck in the fleet, being a somewhat older Airbus aircraft compared to their A320series and A340. Narrowing the fleet down to basically two different types of aircraft.

The 313 was simply TAP's first Airbus aircraft. Indeed, although the oldest TAP aircraft, it's really middle-aged at best and could soldier on in TAP service for 10+ more years. Given TAP's poor financial performance, perhaps the 313 will not be replaced soon.

10 more years huh? Have you flown on it lately? hehe. I love the aircraft, seems like it would be a dream to fly and a lot of fun. But as a passenger, both this summer and last, it was the most uncomfortable plane I have ever been on.. I know the airline is the one who configures the interior and in that case I think TAP did a better job in their A340.

Hi!

For me it's a matter o modernization TAP completely review their long-haul fleet. Infact the A310 is quite old in TAP hands now and I think it will stay not more than 2 or 3 years. The A340 is younger but I still feel that it's an oversized airplane for TAP. The last big beast we had was the 747 and that was completely outdated in early 80's, that's why TAP bought the L1011-500, that was a big commercial mistake, not about the model that was a great one but the fact that TAP ordered when Lockheed anounced that they would close the factory! I think at that point if TAP didn't ordered the Tristar, Boieng could have gonne still with their models for TAP, but I think a lot o political decision was press in this Tristar order and then during some years TAP had no definition, until Airbus arrived! If TAP get the A330-200 they can compete at the same level with other bigger airlines, look now BA is starting LAD flight using the 777, AF is already there with the 777, would you fly there in TAP 343 or 313? I personally would go to LHR and get the 777, it's much more modern, PTV's good service etc.
