Anyone Ever Been To Tijuana For Photo/spot?

Tue Oct 22, 2002 11:03 am

How is TIJ? Sketchy? Mugged for your gear? I am trying to put together a quick trip for Thanksgiving, I was thinking LAS but maybe something else?

Well you can take pics with no problems from the parking lot adjacent to the airport where it's perfectly safe and you can probably get decent take off shots and lots of ramp shots.
You could get a cheap cab ride from the border to the airport and back for about 10-15 bucks total so you wouldn't have to worry about driving or directions.

There are other spots where you could get other shots but that would involve driving yourself or doing some walking, it wouldn't be unsafe but if you're new to town I'd say it's easier just to stick to the parking lot. Good shots, good access, and it's safe.

If you have any questions feel free to ask

The Tijuana Airport is built nearly on the border with California--if you're unable to find a good spotting location on the Mexican side, you can sometimes get departure shots from the US side of the border. Have a look at the TIJ shots in the database for examples. At TIJ you should be able to see a lot of 727s and DC-9s; much more than you'd normally see in the US. These aircraft may disappear from Mexico soon; I think phase-out deadlines for a lot of them are in 2004.

You could also combine your trip to TIJ with a trip to San Diego Brown Field which gets a lot of diverse private and military aircraft, or San Diego Lindbergh Field (SAN) which offers some pretty cool approach shots, though most of the aircraft will be pretty similar (less interesting, perhaps) to what you see up at Seattle/Tacoma. Certainly the weather will be mild and pleasant, probably a nice break from rain.

TIJ can be a goldmine if you are willing to cross the border. I have a few decent shots from the US side, the traffic coming north across the border keeps me from going across. I don't want to sit in line for 2 or 3 hours. Yech. But if you time it right you can have a very short wait. If you are a pedestrian and cab it to the airport you have virtually no wait.

As was posted there are some nice 727's and old DC-9's flying out of TIJ, along with 757's and MD-80's. Of course the poor old Kabo Air 747 is still sitting out gathering dust. I feel sorry for it when I see it.

I understand that there is a weekly Cubana flight on a TU-154, but I have yet to see it. I have seen, and always without a camera in hand, a couple of Russian built helicopters that the military and/or Federal Police use.

If you don't want to cross the border you can get some departure shots from the U.S. side of the border. I bit of a pain, but it can be done. Drop me an email for directions if you want.

Also, as Lindy Field mentioned, Brown Field, which is 1 mile north of TIJ tower, can have some interesting traffic. Lots of business jets, fair amount of military traffic, mostly helicopters.

if we walked across the border and caught a taxi we could avoid the long lines, right?

Hey 2912n,the thing with the Cubana flight is that it's rarely on time ; ) I remember the flight departing around 11:30am Saturday mornings though, arrives at 10:30 or so and then leaves again after a short turnaround. I saw it fly out of the airport last saturday around that time.

And Clickhappy, yes, if you walk across the border and get a taxi, you can avoid the long lines you would get by driving across (and you don't have to deal with Tijuana traffic either)

okay you guys, Tijuana is ON.

I am going to fly into LAS on Nov. 27, on the evening N7 SEA-LAS flight. The 28th will be spent snapping photos at LAS until mid-afternoon. From there I am driving to Palm Springs. Early on the 29th I am going to drive from Palm Springs to the border, and walk across at Tijuana. From there a taxi to the airport (right?) and hopefully some good shots.

Does anyone know of a good resource listing arrival and departure times for TIJ?

This sounds like a fun little adventure  Smile

Maybe they have turkey enchiladas  Big grin

Unless you have a strong constitution I would avoid the taco stand food in TJ. Not that it is bad, but if you are not used to the bacteria there is a good chance that Montezuma will have his revenge on you!!!!

Since you are driving you may want to park at the Otay Border Crossing and cab it from there to the airport. Much closer. Actually driving from there is not bad at all. The road to the airport is well marked.

Good luck and have fun.

Isn't the line at the Otay Mesa crossing going north always shorter than the one in San Ysidro?

B-787/Clickhappy: Otay Mesa is usually a little bit shorter, but it's really all relative. Waiting for 2-3 hours is commonplace at both crossings. My advice would be to cross down into Mexico early in the morning, and come back before 3:30pm, when vacationer traffic picks up.

Clickhappy: In terms of offsite passenger convenience, TIJ is perhaps the world's sketchiest airport. I cannot find one website dedicated to the airport, much less one with a flight schedules. My advice would be to go to an airline's website (AA.com which lists most airlines out of TIJ, Aeromexico.com, or Mexicana.com) and see what they've got flying out of TIJ to MEX, GDL, HMO, and SJD.

ok, well I know these by heart ; ) so here go at least the AM flights for the day

time flight destination equipment
7:00am 109 mexico city md80/757
9:50 111 GDL md80
9:55 173 MEX 757/767
11:55 185 MEX 757
12:30 189 LAP-MEX md80
12:40 2193 CJS-CUU saab340
12:45 151 MZT-DGO-MEX dc9/md80
13:00 117 GDL-MEX md80/757
13:30 163 CUL-MEX md80
14:15 947 HMO-MTY-MEX md80
17:15 113 GDL md80
18:35 171 MEX 757/767
12:25am 199 MLM md80
01:00 133 BJX-MEX md80
01:45 137 AGS-MEX md80
04:00 2111 HMO-CUL-MTY s340

that's about it for AMXs departures on that friday, on other days there's a flight in the morning to either Acapulco or Puerto Vallarta, but not on fridays, and flight 177 (a 757 to MEX at 16:00) operates daily exept fridays.

take in account, that's only AMX. Mexicana, Aviacsa, Allegro, Aerolineas Internacionales, Azteca and Aerocalifornia also have lots of flights, especially in that period between 11:30 and 13:30, so if you wanna catch exotic stuff on the ramp, that's the best time to catch em.

oh and about crossing by car, well it depends a lot, it's definitley unpredictable so I highly recomend just taking a cab. I cross at least once a week to shop and put gas on my car (mexican gas sucks !) but I always cross on weekdays and only when there's not too much line, so that I seldom spend more than 30 minutes in the line, crossing on weekends is torture !.

well I hope that info helps !

I just got a copy of the latest issue of the AeroMexico employee magazine, which has a picture in it that I took. Maybe I will bring that down there and some sympathetic AMX employee can show me around  Smile

If you are going to go across the border on the Otay Mesa border crossing (less traffic than the one in San Ysidro and closer to the airport) just take Interestate 5 or 805 south and then 905 East..........this last freeway ends on the border crossing so you can't miss it, I would also recoment you take a "taxi cab" to the airport......you avoid all the inconveniences of driving in Tijuana and back to the US, park your car on the McDonald's parking lot to the left of the last traffic light before you cross in to Mexico.....and walk from there across the border.

As a tourist you are entitled to bring your personal video and camera equipment so don't let anyone try to scam you while walking across, I would also recomend buying film in the US as it is much cheaper, once across keep walking and you will be approached by taxi drivers offering their services, tell them where you want to go and ask/negotiate for the rate beforehand!.....no use in having them wait for you at the airport because this will get expensive, also you can grab a cab at the airport back to the border, also don't forget to tell them than you need to go to the Otay Mesa (Mesa de Otay in Spanish) border crossing.....so you don't get taken to the other crossing.

While on the outside of the airport wall there is a very interesting road.....this road is at a 90 degree angle to the runway and is at about 300 meters from where the runway starts......needless to say you can get great pictures of planes on final approach!.......but since this is your first time I would recomend you go straight to the airport terminal.

The only airlines servicing TIJ are Aeromexico, Aerolitoral, Mexicana, Aerocalifornia, Allegro, Aerolineas internacionales, Azteca Airlines and Cubana with that once a week flight......and the busiest time at the airport has been mentioned before so I suggest you take that in to account as well.

In regards to the Kabo Air 747, that particular plane is at a maintenance facility adjacent to the airport, that was closed some years ago because of a labor strike, there are still workers on strike outside the facilities so I suggest you take pictures of that plane from a distance.........them being on strike I would think a foreigner with a camera asking innocent questions might not be very welcomed.

If you have any more questions just post them here and we will be happy to help you out.

thanks for all the great info.

I am going to rent a car when I am in TIJ, no sense walking around with all my gear, plus my g/f will be more comfortable that way.

Keep in mind that you can always visit SAN if your shoot at TIJ is unproductive. If you're interested in trying some interesting Mexican cuisine, try the fish tacos in San Diego. Remember also that a lot of the bars on the tourist strip in Tijuana have 3 for the price of 1 magarita specials in the afternoons.  Smile

Being drunk in public.......flasing or mooning the cops outside the bar at 3:00 AM.....those are the things that can get you arrested

As mentioned before spotting in SAN instead of TIJ will give far more airlines and aircraft types.........renting a car in TIJ is more difficult than one in SAN but if you rent a car in SAN you can't take it to Mexico because the insurance will not cover it........how long are you planning to stay in TIJ that you feel the need to rent a car?

we might drive down to Ensenada for the evening and spend the night there. I can rent a Jeep with unlimited miles in Tijuana for US $75, which includes Mexico insurance. Our hotel in PS is free so I don't mind not returning there on Friday night...and that way I can trick the g/f into letting me see the Saturday Cubana flight  Big grin

Ooooh!........that is a good deal considering rental car prices in Mexico are not cheap...........well then in that case happy driving, you will like the views from the scenic road from TIJ to Ensenada....be sure to stop at the rest area/look out point when going to Ensenada.....and while there try the fish tacos.

BTW what does PS stand for?

Cool, how did you get a copy of the employee magazine? BTW, did you see the intranet link it has? I tried it out and it didn't work !!!! bleah....

I'm an AMX employee, I'd show you around the around the airport but on the 29th I'll probably still be in MEX doing a training course.
Oh and sure, you can spot at SAN and get more airplanes and more variety, but at SAN you can get stuff that you can get at any other US airport, and at TIJ you can get lots of old, noisy and exotic airplanes ; )

Good luck catching the Cubana flight on Saturday ! it should be on the ground at 11am if everything goes according to cuban "schedule".

SR117 - Aeromexico had the printer send me a copy. It is the shot I took of the first Alitalia 777.
