European tourism to Egypt came practically to a stop after the massacre on a German tourist group a couple of years ago. Same as Bali today.

Just yesterday, on my way back from work, I was driving behind a bus which on its back had an advertisement for an inclusive tour one week long to Egypt. Haven't seen such a thing for years. The price was insanely low, something like $250.

It seems like they are trying to re-start Egyptian tourism industry.

Let them try. Of course it has to start some day. But I'm not hooked.

The promotional shown on Egypt on CNN here in Asia is so attractive, Im hoping my cousin and his Egyptian wife move there from Canada, I'll waste no time in joining them there.

Is it, in fact, offering more capacity to switch from an A330 to an MD11? Probably the same number of seats and less cargo on an MD11 actually so at worst a reduction in capacity. Plus the A330 is newer and posher, I think this is a downgrade for the MD11 to secondary routes, and probably represents a reduction in capacity on the Cairo route as well. Any thoughts?

I've seen the Egypt ad on CNN too, however please note that there are no Egyptians in the ad. It's just abstract shots of divers, westerners playing golf, Arabic food, pyramids, fireworks. It'd be like doing an ad for Austria but not showing any white people. Very disappointing, and in any case I can't believe Egypt is a booming destination right now.

I think the MD11s have more seats than the 330s. Even though the MD-11 is "less posh", that does not mean it is used on secondary routes. MIA, the most profitable ZRH destination across the Atlantic, is an MD-11 nine out of twelve months a year. Tokyo is also an MD11, hardly a secondary destination (though I do not know about range issues regarding an A330 on Zurich-Tokyo). And, I am sure that once the A340-300s come in, it is MIA, LAX, NRT and such that will see them first, not BOS, ORD, and DEL.

All of Swiss Air Lines East Asian routes are operated with their 'flagship' MD11's, so I dont think the aircraft is "less posh" nor is it for secondary routes or a downgrade for the Cairo service either. LX operate them to Iran as well and to major points in Africa and South America besides the U.S.A.

Actually, the M11s carry more pax. than the A330s:
M11: 12F 49C 180Y = 241 seats total;
Swiss has 2 versions of the 332s:
332: 12F 42C 142Y = 196 seats total
332: 48C 182Y = 230 seats total

As for the "poshness" factor, F seats are the same; C is definitely better on the 332s (legroom, legrest); Y is similar. The 332s are newer and the M11s are really run-down interior-wise, I guess, 'cause they know they are getting rid of them soon and therefore not worth the cost of refurbishing them.

The East Asian routes are operated with the M11s because the 332s don't have the range to go ZRH-NRT or ZRH-HKG or ZRH-BKK nonstop

LX are also increasing frequency to Tehran from two to three weekly services and Tokyo from five to six both routes as mentioned above use the MD11.
