AirTran - First Airline To Serve Vanilla Coke

Thu Oct 24, 2002 6:31 am

Yeah Yeah, I know it isn't much of a breakthrough, but for all of you Vanilla Coke Fans like myself, here is just another reason to fly your local lowfare carrier. I just recieved my businesswire email today and there it was, plain as day AIRTRAN FORGED AN AGREEMENT WITH COKE, and BECAME THE FIRST AIRLINE TO SERVE VANILLA COKE ONBOARD.

Local lowfare carrier?

Oh, must mean Southwest.
Actually, Delta has lower fares. You must mean them.

I'm not surprised the other airlines haven't added Vanilla Coke yet. There is great costs associated with adding to onboard catering and in many cases reduces the availability of alternate items.

A tray of Vanilla Coke and Minutemaid Lemonade is added in addition to the normal complement of beverages. Most people won't touch Vanilla Coke but those that like it, usually younger folks, are very excited that we offer it.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

Are there any airlines that serve Jolt Cola? Maybe Air Tran should add that to their menu...

Is the stuff even any good?? I don't drink caffeine, so I've never had it, but I just don't think that I would care for it. Vanilla ice cream and Coke (Coke floats) were kind of gross when I had them several years ago. (Sorry about going off-topic)

I'm actually kind of surprised that Delta didn't introduce it, being -sort-of- a "flagship" carrier for Coke based in ATL. (Back on topic)

I didn't like it much.

I prefer regular Coke.

I'm not even going to comment any further. The email didn't tell me anything except that AIRTRAN WAS THE FIRST AIRLINE TO OFFER VANILLA COKE ONBOARD. Seiple, When I said fly your local lowfare carrier, you misunderstood me. I said fly your local LOWFARE carrier. Not Fly your Local Major Airline. I just thought you should know what I meant.

Gr8SlvrFlt, I for one am very excited that AirTran offers Vanilla Coke, I would usually just get the juices (and probably still will). It will be a matter of time before other airlines start offering it. Maybe not anytime soon as the airlines are kind of in an economic depression (AFAIK, and correct me if I am wrong but from what I have HEARD so far, AirTran, Southwest, jetBlue posted profits.) (If I left any others out, KINDLY let me know.) But the others posted losses.

Westjet was supposed to add it in August or September. So unless they didn't then maybe they are the first airline but I read in Westjet's onboard magazine that they were adding it so perhaps it is not right.

Obviously BR715-A1-30's post went right over Seiple's head, so I'll spell it out for Mr. Seiple:

He's saying Southwest has become a major carrier just like the rest, rather than a local low-fare carrier like AirTran is and Southwest used to be.

didn't notice it on your last FL flight BR? It has been onboard for a couple months now I believe.

I know that I'm the last person to be saying this, but AirTran is starting to mimic VJet again. Opening a focus city in the DC Area, planning on acquiring larger aircraft types(717-300), and is now having ads for their water in the timetable(look back a-ways to the 95/96 VJet timetables).

When I see our aircraft getting catered here in ATL, the only drink they don't have to refill is the Vanilla Coke...gonna have to brush the dust off the cans soon.

Flyer732,

A Soda can can actually last up to 30 years with soda in it.

After that, the soda will become acidic, eat up the aluminum can and leak.

One day I heard they'd like to solve this problem by starting to use steel cans that are as light as aluminum cans, as cheap, and last much longer.

With modern technology, steel can be made as thin and as light as aluminum cans. The problem though is the cost. The cost of steel will need to be lowered before, unless everyone is willing to pay more for soda can.

So you can keep a soda lasting more than 30 years without leaking.  Smile

I simply said that no one was asking for them, not that they were leaking.

Hmmm, BR, did you specifically say LOWFARE? Well, in this case, Southwest is still TECHNICALLY a low-fare airline.

I'd really prefer Pepsi Twist over Vanilla Coke, tried that, it tastes crap.

The only thing Vanilla Coke is good for is a mixer for Captain Morgan...You think they will start selling those little Captain bottles on flight...If so, I will fly them everytime.

Now the Diet Vanilla Coke is actually better than the regular Vanilla Coke. The reformulated Diet Cherry Coke is good as well. I don't think Jolt is ideal for serving passengers, it would be better served to the crew or as a fuel additive for Jet-A. I mean do you really want a cabin full of hyper pax? And could you imagine if the flight was a long flight and you went too long between beverage service? There'd be more cases of air rage if airlines served Jolt. Maybe it would be a good one to put on the early morning flights.

Tried vanilla coke.........didn't like it....have a mint and try the generic brand cola sold at wal mart and you will get the idea of what vanilla coke tastes like.......oh! and be sure to have a spoonfull of sugar right after that.

"here is just another reason to fly your local lowfare carrier."

Um, my city is served by none other than 4 lowfare carriers, and AirTran is a distant third in number of operations and they only fly to ATL and ICT from here (WOO-HOO!). Not exactly the preferred "local low-fare carrier".
Anyway BFD on the Vanilla Coke. Stuff is alright, tastes a little like Captain Morgan and Coke. For those of you old enough to drink that is.

AirVomit Offers Inflight Insulin

Fri Oct 25, 2002 4:08 am

Airtran serving the worst dishwater ever to be bottled will also offer insulin to those who are overwhelmed by the lousy sugar tates.

What's next? Pepsi Blue on Jet Blue...

save the message space for something important...

Serving Vanilla Coke during flights isn't a revolutionary feat, but it's nice to mix it up in regards to selection of non-alcoholic beverages.

However, maybe the airlines can consider adding Sobe energy drinks to their beverage list - it's quite tasty and it keeps me up during all-nighters in college... Surprisingly enough, Pepsi owns Sobe (I found this out in a social commentary posted on Slate.com), so integration into airlines with pre-existing Pepsi contracts might not be a hassle - unless someone creates a ruckus on board due to a reaction created by the dietary supplements found in every bottle.
