Wow, United 747-400 LAX-SFO

Thu Oct 24, 2002 6:34 am

This must be a relocation flight that I found on United.com. I then checked every Saturday through Christmas but no other 744's were seen.

Flight Number: United Airlines 864

Aircraft Type: Boeing 747-400

Departure City: LAX

Departure Date/Time: Oct 26 2:15P

Arrival City: SFO

Arrival Date/Time: Oct 26 3:40P

It is on that to:
1) it continues Change of gauge service from SAL.
2) it goes to SFO for MX and in position for the Trans-Pac service the next day.

When you position an aircraft from point A to point B, it might be empty, but if you can sell a few fares, why not do it...

I dont see any criticism necessary. Flying a 747 from SFO to LAX, does it require a report on first page of the LA Times and SF Chronicle...?
Sounds to me that it would be better in the National Inquirer for some...

It could be a glitch in the system. Maybe it's a 737 that connects with a 747. If you put Baltimore to Sydney in, you'll get 747 for the equipment but it's actually a 757 that connects with a 747 in SFO, all on one flight number. Maybe this is like the system incorrectly showing a BWI-SFO 747 because of the continuing service.

If you put LA to Manila in for UA864, the CRS might state equipment 747 on the screen but it's really a 737 LA-SFO connecting to a 747 SFO-Manila, again all on one flight number.

It IS a change of gauge, but going from an A-320 on the SAL-LAX segment to a B-747-400 on the LAX-SFO segment. However, this only occurs on 26OCT, supporting the possibility that it's simply to reposition the aircraft.

Hope this helps!

It is in the schedule as far as I looked and that was until after Thanksgiving. Unless they pull it before then.

I think even during our recession there is more than enough demand on a SFO-LAX flights to fill 747s.

I flew the same route on Saturday, and it was operated by a 747-400 N119UA. The aircraft load was as follows: F12/C8/Y84 out of F14/C73/Y260 (i think that's the 744 capacity). We were non-revving and were able to get into First Suite. Got some photos, and hope to upload them onto airliners in the next 2 weeks. Flight duration was 46mins at FL350. The climb to FL350 took only 11mins. The aircraft was towed to the maintenance hangar at SFO shortly after it was fully unloaded.

This flight is a continuation of the SAL to LAX flight which is operated on a A320. Keep in mind that this flight is only flown on Sat. and has been going on for a while now.

Check these flights out operated by a 767:
LAX-SFO:
UA 1008 Oct 30
UA 1800 Oct 31
UA 1818 Dec 1

SFO-LAX:
UA 865 Oct 30
UA 1207 Dec 1

We should file this thread under "Hello & Welcome to Last Week!!!"

I've only mentioned that I have flown that route/AC/carrier combination six times in the last few months, under various threads, usually title "what's the biggest plane you've flown under an hour/shortest route etc..."

It's really no secret that any of the big leaguers reposition the planes in the late afternoons, or at night.

Do a search before posting, no wonder the database is overflowing there. It's all about doing your homework, people...

I know that UA has historically collapsed say 3 737 LAX-SFO flights into a 744. They used to do this a lot when the Shuttle product was still in operation. If they had only a handful of seats sold on a series of flights, or if there was a weather delay into SFO, they would load the 733 pax into a single 744 flight.

Wn700Driver: This is a FORUM. I think that anyone should be able to post whatever they want as long as its about aviation. Thats the point of a forum: to discuss. If someone has question or inquiry, people in the know should answer it. Even if its been discussed or answered before.

Ive done a repo flight, USAirways A330-300 PHL-PIT...a one day only thing to position it for a PIT-LGW flight I think, flight #740 on 3/16...the plane was pretty empty and the fares were dirt cheap...repo flights are not uncommon...
