Air Canada To Fly Between TLV & Fra?

Thu Oct 24, 2002 9:20 pm

Hi everyone!

I just looked for November schedules between TLV and FRA.
I was amazed to see that from November 1st AC will codeshare on LH morning flight from TLV to FRA LH691/UA3797/AC9021 and the morning flight from FRA to TLV LH686/UA3796/AC9020.
While the UA flights numbers are only for online connex pax, the AC flights numbers are marketed as regular codeshare on the LH flights, which means that AC has fifth freedom rights for the line.

What I don't get is that as far as I know this codeshare is impossible under the Israeli-German aviation agreements. Anyway, I haven't heard anything about this besides what I saw at the schedules. Does anyone here have any more info regarding this? Does AC got a fifth freedom rights or its a mistake and the flights are for connex traffic only?!

As a side note, AC will start codeshare with LY on the route TLV-YYZ when winter timetable starts operating.

so where´s the point of fifth freedom rights when the pax aren´t flying on AC on that leg?
i mean, that´s what codesharing is about, AC sends its pax to FRA, and LH picks them up...
or am i the one mixing things up?

cheers

AC has been granted some concessions with respect to their service to TLV. There is a lot of demand right now for Canada-Isreal flights primarily from connecting pax from the US. ELAL and AC are taking advantage of this by codeshareing with each other, they are also each being granted other code-share rights that were not previously permitted under Canada/Isreal bilaterals.

No, Air Canada will not fly between Frankfurt and Tel Aviv.
No, Canada does not have fifth freedom rights between Germany and Israel.
There is no current aviation bilateral between Israel and Canada.
There is, however, a ministerial agreement that is valid until 2003 March 29.
This agreement allows Air Canada to codeshare with ElAl and with one other carrier.

The flights you saw are codeshare services using Lufthansa (the "one other carrier"). Air Canada provides service between Canada and Frankfurt. Lufthansa provides service between Frankfurt and Tel Aviv. These codeshare rights are valid until 2003 March 29.
