Restricted Routes That Would Be Very Popular

Sat Oct 26, 2002 12:44 am

What are some routes that are currently restricted due to political or embargo reasons that would be very popular if allowed as daily non-stops?

Here are three to get started:

-- Taipei-mainland China. (This could happen in the near future as negotiations are planned)
-- Miami-Havana, New York-Havana, etc.
-- Seoul-North Korea

Any others?

What about flights from "restricted" airports-like DCA or LGA nonstop to the West Coast?

Don't both of those airports have restrictions limiting them to flights within a 1500 mile radius or something?

What is the reasoning behind that?

If one could fly say nonstop between SJC and LGA, I'm sure that would be an instant hit.

well, international services from india is very restricted. there are many airlines which loved to serve much more frequently, such as LH, EK, and certainly most of the other european carriers...
LH once claimed they could use an A380 already today on flights to DEL and that they´d love to go twice daily to DEL with 744s, but they can´t since the number of frequencies is heavily restricted.

India has destroyed a lot of economic potential in order to protect AI. Cheaper flights would promote growth all over the country. Interestingly though, I think India has Open-Skies for cargo.

Boeing757/767,

Along the same lines with what you had posted, Chicago - Havana (United) and Dallas/FT - Havana (American) would be pretty popular as well.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

JFK-ZAG would be good. There is a huge croatian population here in New York and northern New Jersey.

Alaska Airlines operates SEA - DCA - SEA, and it is very popular.

Kathmandu-Lhasa. The most spectacular geography in the world; from the Kathmandu Valley, over the Himalayas, then above the Tibetan Plateau moonscape into Lhasa.

Some people might appreciate being able to go to Edmonton Municipal to catch short-haul flights. The airport used to receive commercial service, but is now limited to small aircraft.

Jersey to Heathrow is my number one! We lost it in 2000 and unfortunately more domestic routes are likely to get the axe.

Dublin to the US/Canada, currently restricted by a crazy Irish govt regulation to protect SNN (which it doesn't do and only succeeds in undermining Dublin).

Taiwan-China MUST be the number one: whoever gets the TPE-SHA/PVG route is going to make a killing. I wonder how they'll work this; start with major routes such as this, but share them out, so that whoever gets SHA won't get PEK (or might get it from KHH). The potential there must be immense.

What is the problem with Croatia? Why would JFK-ZAG be restricted?

There use to be nonstop flights before the break up of former Yugoslavia. JAT Yugoslav Airlines and Pan Am both flew JFK-ZAG. Ever since then, no other airline has even bothered with this route. This route could be very profitable especially in the summer time. I don't think its restricted, but I don't know why US airlines don't want to fly there.

In addition, San Diego-Tijuana would probably also classify as one of the shortest flights ever - beating LAX-SNA by a mile. Well, maybe about 5 miles! Big grin

Let me just say that NO COUNTRY just throws open its skies just like that.

AFAIK, The US has allowed Indian carriers, access to only 5 ports in the US and in return US carriers can access 4 ports in India.

First, there are a number of daily flights from Miami to Havana. Plus, CO has 737 flights from JFK to Havana. I agree with CB777, there should be a U.S. route to ZAG. ZAG is undergoing a process where it will increase the size of the airport, terminal, and will have jetways capable of handling 747s that are connected to the building. This one site said that once it is done, U.S. carriers will most likely serve ZAG.

There are definately a few transatlantic routes to/from Ottawa that have yet to be tried out. Majority of transatlantic traffic (except for flights to LHR) goes through Montreal YUL.

I would propose YOW-CDG. Other than having a large french community, Ottawa has a lot of tourists that visit from France, not to mention Canadians traveling in the opposite direction. Connections at CDG are also very favorable for most European and Middle East destinations. Furthermore, YOW-AMS would also carry sufficiently good loads. Ottawa has a large middle eastern community, and Amsterdam is quite often a transit point between North America and the Middle East. Amsterdam can also be regarded as one of the main transit points for passengers flying between Canada and India or Pakistan.

Other high transatlantic seasonal traffic would include good connections between Germany, Russia, England with the Caribbean. On the European spectrum, I would expect that BEG-GVA would be a very good route, and there are indications that such a route will be opened next year.

A few more transatlantic with some potential include:
YUL-TLV or YYZ-YUL-TLV
ORD-BEG or ORD-JFK-BEG
YUL-MXP/FCO
YYZ-BEG

"YOW-AMS would also carry sufficiently good loads"

The success of YOW-AMS would depend on its yields, not just the loads.

I flew on a crowded (possibly even sold-out) Air Canada 762 from YYZ to AMS last month which suggested that Amsterdam is a popular destination. But judging by the unusually festive mood at the gate and on the aircraft, it gave the impression that the high-yield business pax were more vastly outnumbered by the low-yield vacationers than usual.

"YOW-AMS would also carry sufficiently good loads"

KLM tried the YOW-YHZ-AMS route a few years ago with the 763. It did not last. Given that YOW could not fill (say) half the 763, I doubt a nonstop (or even a 1-stop) YOW-AMS will happen again this decade.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I have a friend who went on this route. He was bound for India. In any case, the airline should have scheduled the route better, so that it would better encompass connecting flights for the Middle East, India and Pakistan. There are about 100.000 people of just middle eastern origin living in Ottawa. Given that fact, it is hard to believe that a route, encompassing good connections, would not be successful.

On the other hand, if Air Canada were to open such a route, they would experience significant difficulty, since they would face limitations from partners belonging to the Star Alliance. In this case, i doubt that Air Canada would have the opportunity to cooperate with KLM or other airlines that are bound for the East. Star Alliance members in Europe would be intent on taking the AC passengers instead...

With the big Cuban community in Puerto Rico and with the amount of Puerto Ricans that like to go to Cuba Im sure a SJU-HVN flight would be very popular.
And Im sure DCA-SJU would be very popular with the politicians.
