Tornadoes, Thunderstorms Currently Over MSY

Sat Oct 26, 2002 11:27 am

A few weeks ago we had hurricanes and tropical storms, tonight we've got very severe weather in New Orleans and around MSY, complete with tornadoes. I counted five tornado warnings in the past 2 hours, including one spotted by a helicopter pilot about 6 miles southwest of MSY.

I made it home from the airport just before it began and I've been checking the local TV stations (constantly cutting in with updates), and keeping my scanner on the MSY tower frequency. The helicopter pilot's conversation with the tower was incredible to say the least, especially when he spotted the tornado.

Numerous air carrier traffic either diverted (one to PNS that I recall) or went into holds in the air or on the ground. I heard a number of flights go missed approach.

Those of you in the southeast, especially along the Gulf Coast, you all may be getting it soon.

That was probably the same system that caused the tornadoes in Corpus Christi yesterday. Just watching the weather on the 10:00 news, it looks like you guys might be getting even more rain in a day or so. The remnants of Hurrican Kenna (?) are moving eastward across Mexico and South Texas and are either expected to re-emerge in the Gulf of Mexico or follow a stationary front that is currently along the Gulf Coast.

I'll bet you'll be glad when hurrcane season is finally over, Tom.  Smile

The local weatherman said that he thought the remnants from Kenna would become a low pressure system and proceed over our way later on tomorrow and Sunday. They are predicting another round of showers tomorrow afternoon, not sure if they'll become severe or not. And a cold front coming in from the northwest may help steer it and push it along, as well.

You're not kidding, LoneStarMike, we will be very glad to get hurricane season behind us!  Wow!

And in the U.K. we have got rain, rain and more rain!!  Wink/being sarcastic It must be amazing to see a tornado from the air, even though I can't say I'd want to be in that position myself! We get a few over here but I doubt ours even make the fujita scale!

Twins, twins, everywhere.... but where are the three holers?

Damn El Nino effect. We have not had any descent rainfall in the southeast corner of Australia for nearly 2 years. Can you guys send some over? We'll put up with a little bit of wind as long as it brings a lot of rain  Big thumbs up
