Registration # Of Your Favorite Aircraft

Sat Oct 26, 2002 5:10 pm

Which aircraft registration number gave you the most memorable flight you've ever experienced in your life?

Mine was on Korean Air HL7534 which was a Boeing 773 because I remember how powerful her engines were when taking off from Seoul Incheon Airport on a nice cool evening. The 98,000 lbs. thrust take off power was really impressive as I could see the engines revving so powerfully from the window near my seat. This aircraft effortlessly cruised at 570 mph groundspeed (against the headwind traveling in the westward direction) which is a little higher than the 0.84 Mach given for most B777s. I hope to be able to try the Boeing 773LR as the GE90-115B may give even a more awesome performance than the PW4098 that I've already seen. Also, I'd love to try the Boeing 744QXLR in the near future because hopefully it'll be a quieter and smoother flight than the older generation Boeing 744s I've taken in the past (my favorite ones are those with GE B1F or B5F engines).

I flew aboard this aircraft last October (when no one was flying, practically) on a run from Amsterdam to Chicago. The above picture, interestingly, was taken by someone on October 5; I flew on -SVC the day before.

I was seated in the back, and the plane was barely a third full. I even won one of the in-flight trivia contests on the interactive system. One of the crew members even walked to my seat and presented me with a nice gift for winning! The seat-back video screens had all sorts of entertainment on them, and of course I had three of those screens to myself. One was always tuned to the inflight map, while the others were tuned to movies.

B-HUJ.. B747-400 of Cathay Pacific.
I flew on it from HKG - FRA last summer. And I stayed in the cockpit for almost 5 hours. It was my first cockpit visit and was a real great tour!

I forgot to add that the Korean Air HL 7534 took approximately 4.5 hours from Incheon to Bangkok which was extremely quick compared to an average of 5.0 to 5.5 hours for most other aircraft traveling this route.

Only one drawback - this aircraft didn't have PTVs installed in the Economy Class yet at that time but I hope they'll put them on soon. Despite lacking the PTVs, I must admit that HL 7534 was definitely a pure pleasure to fly on.

I'm not one to try and make an effort to see and remember plane regs whenever I fly (not even for trip reports) but for some reason the reg N751PR flown by Philippine Airlines sticks out. It was a flight from CEB-MNL. There was nothing especially particular about that flight other than going back home after a great time with family and friends but somehow it sticks out as being memorable. And it's weird how somehow I remembered the rego.

My favorite aircraft is/was TF-ABQ, a Boeing 747-246B of Air Atlanta Icelandic. This aircraft which began it's life with Japan Airlines in 1972 has now been taken out of service. When I last heard, it was stored in Chateauroux, France.

On December 2nd, 2001 I went on a memorable cruise on this jet. This was a special Christmas charter flight which Air Atlanta Icelandic operated in cooperation with The First Flight Society in Iceland. The aircraft flew from Keflavik and up north to Akureyri and further up to Grimsey where the Arctic circle passes through. Passengers were served cookies and sodas while Santa Clauses played the accordion and sang chrismas songs. Those who wanted got their noses painted blue (because of the cold up north by the arctic circle Smile/happy/getting dizzy ). The aircraft landed again in Keflavik about two hours after takeoff.

It is hard to decide what my favourite aircraft is but I will have to go with these two.

My favourite aircraft of all time has got to be one of the GF L1011 I had to FRA, unfortunetly I couldn't remember the registration.

A7-ABN a Qatar Airways A300-622R is probably my second favourite aircraft that I have flown on. I have flown this aircraft most in QR's fleet, it is the first AB6 to join QR and all my most memorable flights with QR have been on this bird.

G-MLJL, A330-200 of MyTravel Airways.

Simply because my dad brought me a video of a flight from Manchester to Sanford on that aircraft in the flight deck. Excellent video and it's now an ambition of mine to pilot that plane some day (One can dream...)

It is hard to decide. I have so many favorites. If I had to choose one I would choose N989AT, because it is the newest aircraft I have been on.... June 10, 2002 was when I flew on it, and June 10, 2002 was also its second day of service. Brand New!!!!

This photo was taken 1 month, and 6 days later after I flew on it.

I have A LOT of favorite aircraft, but this is one of them. It's special because I when I was very young, my sister (or dad, I forgot) shot a photo of this 741 taxing by. . . .(in 1998) I shall never forget the white nose. (I named it "Snow Nose"  Laugh out loud) It makes me laugh everytime I think of her, but now look at this 741. She will always be in my heart.  Crying

I'm probably a bit biased towards the DC10, but of the four I work on at MYT, G-DPSP will always be my favourite 10-10: it just seems the nicest one of the fleet to work on, seems more reliable than the others, but other than that isn't really a specific reason for it to be my favourite...except perhaps all our aircraft registrations are selected by Directors as their 'personal' registration - I guess if the person who chose the registration was not someone you were very fond of, you may subconsciously dislike the aircraft reg, and vice versa! Many of the crew refer to the a/c by the christian name of the director that chose it.

Most memorable . . . but not a particularly fond memory.

5Y-BEN
Airbus A310-304
"Harambee Star"
LHR/NBO/MBA

1988, a late night departure, and the longest, darkest night ever. I've never known a crew turn of ALL the cabin/galley lights some two hours into the flight, but they did, and then slept the whole way. Navigation to the bathrooms was like an obstacle course, and I seemed to be the only person awake. A very strange flight.

Unrelated, but sadly this aircraft is no more.

Fondest memory is . . .
N220AU
DC10-10
Project Orbis

Formerly: N10DC?, N101AA?, G-BELO, N183AT, G-GCAL
A dear old 'gal, but you should see her now!

I am happy to have worked within her.

Mine was N674UW...a USAirways A330-300 that I flew from PHL to PIT, US flt. 740, on March 16th, 2002 in Envoy Class (used upgrade cert.) just for the hell of it (the fare was a r/t of $84, returning to PHL via Airtran 717-200, booked as two separate oneways)...It was my first US A330 flight (actually my first A330 flight ever), and completed my mini quest to fly on every US mainline aircraft type in service at the time, and the flight itself was very enjoyable, culminating in the smoothest landing on a widebody Ive ever had on PIT's runway 28R...

Best $84 I ever spent...

Also, VH-CDS, an Australian-registered Bell 206, was notable for being my first and only helicopter flight, although it was only four minutes long (a flight ferrying me and a few others to a remote whitewater rafting put in site in Far North Queensland in late July, 2001), it left a lasting impression on me...it was incredibly fun...regrettably the only film I took of the flight (I used up an entire disposable camera on just that flight), was subsequently destroyed on the rafting trip and couldnt be developed...if anyone has pics of VH-CDS...please let me know

Mine is a KLM 747-206B PH-BUM(Sir Charles E. Kingsford Smith) My parents travelled on this bird way back in 1980 to Los Angeles. In 1998 I travelled with the same aircraft to New York.
It's amazing that after 18 years this aircraft is still flying every day to some far-away destination.

I always liked N747SP. The first -SP. She went on to be N530PA with Pan Am,then N140UA in 1986 with UA. Since srapped @ Ardmore,OK.

I've flown on G-BOAF three times, (October 1993 IAD-LHR, September 11 2001 LHR-LHR and September 16 2002 JFK-LHR), the October '93 one being my first Concorde flight.
As each of these flights were very memorable, and we eat, drank and slept OAF's prototype tank mod. in the first half of 2001, then its successful air test on 17 July 2001, the first BA Concorde to fly for 11 months.
So I think it has to be Alpha Fox, the last Concorde built (f/f 20 April 1979).

Honorable mention to BA 747-136 G-AWNE, my first ever flight in August 1983, when November Echo flew a post maintenance air test.
Any first flight is memorable, add in the multiple stalls and all the other testing, made it all the more so.
(Only pics of WNE in the database are in Landor livery, when I flew on it the original livery with the big 'British' titles was in use).

9H-ABP "Rabat/Victoria" (creepily enough the town where I live) scared the hell out of me on a short hop from Catania to Malta a few years back. There was a smell of kerosene in the cabin, the evacuation instructions went on twice, people were asked not to go to the lavatory, the crew called the fire department at MLA and fire engines escorted us to the old apron when landed.
An experience which, despite being trivial, I will never forget.
