Sun Oct 27, 2002 11:16 am

I know that they used to land really low at Kai Tak, but I just found this photo:

How low is this plane from the top of the building. Is this an illusion or is he really this low?

Its not really an illusion. I have been to Kowloon numerous times and seeing these planes no more than 200 ft above the buildings.

Looks like a pretty standard Kai Tak approach. Cathay flew that landing like they were on rails, they did it every day. If you want to see some shots that will scare a couple of years right off your life, have a look at the way Alitalia used to fly their MD11s into Kai Tak. It's probably in bad taste to put it like this but the 9/11 hijackers would have done about the same job if photographic and anecdotal evidence is anything to go by.

"Another day in the office for an Alitalia MD11 pilot" reads the caption. See what I mean? Here's another one:

This photo doesn't looks so scary but check out the caption: "My 500th photo to Airliners.net and I wanted to make it a special one. This is THE lowest and scariest approach I ever saw at Kai Tak. The AZ MD11 was so low that my heart missed a beat as I thought that he was going to put the aircraft into Kowloon City. I will never forget this landing. If you compare this photo to others on the IGS, you will see just how low the MD11 was!"

PS these are the first photos I've included after 4,000 posts on airliners.net. So Alitalia at Kai Tak is special for at least two of us, apparently ("My 500th photo to Airliners.net and I wanted to make it a special one"). Not to mention the many thousand of unluckly Alitalia customers who lived through this unholy experience.
