So from FNT it will go straight into what, storage? Or do they take it to MSP or DTW to remove the fun stuff they want to save and whatnot?

So sad!!  Sad

Well, I will be on an NW 727 on December 24th, so I guess I will have to savor that flight. Perhaps I will video tape some portions..

Once the 727's are gone, I'd guess the 757's take over the rest of the sport charter area.

This past weekend, I was on two NW 727 flights. The first one was especially memorable. The flight was on N204US and the captain got on the p.a. with the recording of a train horn. He said, "All aboard!" like a conductor would and welcomed us on board the aircraft for the flight from MEM to MCO. The captin really seemed to want everybody to have a fun time, which I know I did. The plane left the gate with a powerback using thrust reverse, which I was excited about. At the end of the flight, I spoke to the captain and told him that I enjoyed his train horn. I also told him that I loved the 727 and that I was going to miss flying on it. He told me that he would continue to fly the 727 until June 2003 for sports charters. After that, he said seniority would tell what plane he would fly next.

Currently there is a dedicated 727 sports charter sub-fleet used for those NBA and NHL teams that NW has under contract. They have special interiors for these charters they have not used in the regular passenger fleet during the NBA and NHL seasons. In the past, at the conclusion of of the NBA and NHL seasons in the spring, the 727's would be converted back into to passenger configuration for added capacity during the summer months.

NW has ended the contracts with NBA and NHL teams as it stands now at the conclusion of the 02-03 season with the sports charter 727's will be retired. Currently NW still has 1 remaining DC-10-40 that is solely doing charter service.....for NFL teams, military, and special groups. It will be retired, along with the other DC-10-40's that were retired at the beginning of September from passenger service. NW regularly uses 757's to do College Football and NFL charters. They also have 1 747-200 N613US that solely does charter service, again for NFL teams, college bowl games, military, special groups, etc.

Since the contracts were not renewed, these teams will have to look elsewhere. Whether or not NW will let them to do charters with regularly configured passenger aircraft is yet to be known. However there will be no special aircraft in a more luxurious configuration for the teams use.

Since these last flights go to "remote" stations from the hub, how do they position a DC-9, 320 or other for the flight the next morning? I guess the next day these 727 crews ferry the plane to the desert?

NW 72S is a beauty. I sure am going to miss this plane. Powerful, loud and a tough looking plane. The way aviation is supposed to be.
