Your First Commercial Flight

Sat Nov 02, 2002 2:17 pm

Just curious to see what your first commercial flight was like. What airline and aircraft you flew on and what cities they were between. This is the flight that started my love of aviation. Smile

Airline: United Airlines
Flight: ?
Departure City: ORD
Arrival City: IAD
Aircraft: 737-200

It was in the begining of July 1992. It was a great flight and I have not or will not forget the flight (as most of us will not forget our first). O.k. lets see yours now.

UALrampORD,

Weird... I was gonna start a topic exactly on this very topic.

Great minds think alike I guess. Big grin

Anyway, when I was a kid my mom told me that I used to fly a lot when I was an infant, mostly on international flights. But my first commercial flight that I (somewhat) remember was a Northwest Orient flight from ORD-NRT-MNL when I was 8 or 9. By myself! You'd think a flight like that would be memorable but I don't honestly remember much of it other than having to deplane via stairs at NRT.
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

I flew first flight prop-jet CV-580 on North Central DAY-MKE on summer of 1973. I flew first jet on DC-9-30 North Central return MKE-DAY summer of 1973.

I remembered some of it on first flight. I remembered well after all, I fell in love aviation when I raised.

I think I was 6 1/2 years old, so it was December of 1975 during Christmas break. My dad and I had taken our trailer down to Lake Jennings, near San Diego, to go fishing for a week, but my brother was sick, so he and my mom stayed behind for a couple of days, and then they flew down (LAX-SAN) on PSA. So, to make it fair, on the way back, I got to fly back with my mom SAN-LAX and my brother drove back with my dad.

I know it was a 727, and I recall it being in the tri-colors with the smile, and I recall wanting (and getting) the window seat, and marvelling at the coastline going by. All too soon, the flight was over.

Not much has changed, though. I still prefer the window seat (although I let my common sense take over and fly in an aisle seat trans-pacific) and I look forward to flying!

My first commercial flight was from New York to London -
There we connected with BEA flight (Vickers Viking) -
I was 5 of age - on board of a Pan American Boeing 377 -
I received a "diploma" in my name - aircraft was N1029V -
Aug 29-30-31, 1949...
I remember I played in the spiral staircase down to the bar...
And also visited the cockpit... (Mother and I had VIP treatment)
Dad was Air Attache at US Embassy in Paris...

I believe it was late in 1983 or early 1984---I was only around 10 months old, ORD-LGB on a Jet America MD-80. My parents were looking at houses in the LA area.

My first flight was when I was 4 years old on TWA in 1986...I flew from San Juan to JFK then connected and flew JFK-CDG-Cairo-Bombay. Sory, don't remember the aircraft though I'd appreciate it if some TWA buffs could tell what planes I was most likely on.

My first flight was in 1988 when I was 10 years old and went on a holiday with my parents. We flew to Cologne, Germany and back home from Amsterdam 7 days later (12/09/1988-19/09/1988).

Airline: Eagle Air of Iceland (went under in the early ninetees)
Flight: IS524
Departure City: KEF/BIKF (Keflavik, Iceland)
Arrival City: CGN/EDDK (Cologne (Köln), Germany)
Aircraft: 737-200 (TF-ISA or TF-VLT)

I can't say I remember very much from that first flight. My interest in aviation didn't start to emerge until after I went on my third trip abroad in August, 2000.

Dear Vikram -
xxx
Absolutely certain that you were on 747-100 with TWA from JFK, all the way to BOM - I was doing that route quite often (with PanAm) and I remember TWA was normally using the 747-100, but also occasionally the few 747SP they had back in these days...
xxx
Too bad your parents did not ask for a "first flight certificate" or equivalent for you, most airlines have these forms... Here in Argentina we have them, also we have the "God Neptune Certificate" for crossing the Equator for the first time... we always make a certificate and offer a bottle of champagne...

Vikram: it would have been the 747-100. By 1986, TWA's SP's were flying (two of them, at least) in American Airlines colors doing the DFW-NRT non-stop; I forget where the third SP ended up.

TWA had ordered the SP's in order to start some non-stop service to the Middle East (I think JFK-Riyadh) but the route authority never came through.

My first commercial flight was on Thanksgiving Day in 1959 from DCA to LGA.
My mom was in the hospital so my dad sent me a ticket to fly home to see her.
The airplane was an Eastern L-188A Electra (N525EA, I think) in the original Eastern Golden Falcon paint scheme, beautiful.
I had been hanging around DCA on the weekends since I started school there in September (You could do that in those days without being suspected as being a terrorist and everyone would talk to you!!) and the L-188's became my favorite airplane in and out of DCA; Eastern, American, National, Braniff, Northwest.
So when I got to the airport for my trip, I was totally gassed on being able to fly on one.
There was a light frost on the airplane and the inside was a little cool. I boarded via the forward entry door retractable airstairs (no jetways then) and sat on the right side forward of the wing and props so I would have a good view (First class was in the back on the props, both turbo and reciprocating powered).
The acceleration and climbout were exhilarating; cloudy day so all I saw, once at cruise, were the clouds; landed at LGA, smooth with a little forward G's when the props were reversed. I was hooked on the Electra and anytime I had to fly I always hoped for an L-188.

It was October 1973 on United from Cleveland to LAX. The flight was a DC-8; a 61 I think. I remember that was before jetways were installed at Hopkins, so everyone had to walk across the ramp to the plane.

My first commercial flight was onboard USAir (Old reds scheme) from ALB-MCO (not sure if we had a stop over).....

Aircraft was a 727-200, and I remember we (Mom, Grandmother, cousin, myself) sat in the very first section of the plane, at that time, a booth! Mom and I facing forward, Gram and cousin across the table facing us....

Result like many of us: Life-time love of airliners!

I was a little more than a year old, so I obviously can't remember- My mom's told me about it & details are really sketchy.

What I've been able to piece together:
November 1988
TWA 727 (?-it's what my dad thought.)
CMH-DCA (did that ever exist w/TW?)

All I really know was that it was TWA & we were going to D.C. That & the return were the only trips I would get to take on TWA...

B747Skipper,
You're a lucky fellow. I would have loved to have flown on a Stratocruiser!

My first flight was in the dawn of the jet age, in 1965. I was a wee lad of five when I flew on a United DC-8 from JFK to LAX and on to HNL.

My first flight was at the age of six in March or April 1979 on CP Air. We flew from Winnipeg to Vancouver via Edmonton on a 737-200, then connected to a 727 for the onward trip to Los Angeles.

After that, I gained a reputation as the kid who was always looking at the airplanes. A lot of things have changed about me since then, but that has remained a constant.

I can't really remember my first flight because I was between 4 and 6 weeks old. It was on a Piedmont 737-200 from TRI (Tri Cities, Tennessee) to CLT. My mom, my dad, and I then continued on Pan Am 727s from CLT to MIA to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It was a military charter flight from Kadena AFB to LAX via Anchorage I think. Earliest flight I can remember well was Wichita to Memphis on a Northwest DC-9-14 in July 1997. That was first of many flights I flew on a trip to Okinawa, Japan. That trip sparked my interest in airliners. Before then, I was into military aviation. I've been into aviation for as long as I can remember.

Summer, 1985

Aspen Airways BAe-146

From: Farmington, NM (FMN)
To: Durango, CO (DRO)

Flight Duration: 10 minutes

I was 14 years old, hadn't ever flown before, so bought a $30 (lawn mowing money) round trip ticket between the two towns (about 45 miles apart), and flew up and flew back that night.

According to my mother, my first flight was on "a small plane." This unfortunately doesn't help because my mom classifies planes as small ranging B1900s to 737s, so who knows... It was however on USAir.

My parents left me with my grandparents in Chicago and then continued on to their vacation destination. I don't remember a whole lot about it, except that the aircraft had a blue interior. lol.

1977 or early '78, Eastern airlines EWR-ATL-MCO.

Went to Disney World with the folks during a tremendous snowstorm, I remember they were doing a huge runway construction project at EWR and that we stopped in Atlanta on the way down. I was 3 years old, I can't remember the type of aircraft but Im pretty sure it was white.

So Im thinking it was either an A-300 (did they have them in January of '77/'78) or a white Eastern L-1011.

First flight was in '90 or '91, flying to my uncle's funeral, from GSO-LNK on TWA. I believe it was a 727 on GSO-STL, with a turboprop, probably a Saab 340, on STL-LNK.

when: February 1980
from: Zurich (Switzerland)
to: Dhahran (Saudi Arabia)
airline: Swissair
aircraft: Douglas DC-8-60

My Dad had to work near Dhahran and so we moved there for a few months. I was almost 3 years old at that time. I only remember having been in the cockpit for a few minutes.
