UK Clears Bmi+UA Alliance, And...

Sat Nov 02, 2002 2:38 pm

UK regulators has approved the alliance between bmi british midland and United Airlines. However, this action shows a proposal on increasing competition in London Heathrow.

The regulators said the antitrust exemption would only come into force when Anglo-American restrictions denying British Midland the right to fly between Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport, and the United States were removed.

Currently, only AA/UA and BA/VS allowed to fly Heathrow-US flight.

The other day it was announced that tourists to the UK had dropped to their lowest numbers in 20 years. Now this expected approval from the Office of Fair Trading. I am sure that with both of these announcements there will be enormous pressure on the UK to at last do something about Bermuda II.
The Office of Fair Trading stated very clearly that consumers would benefit from this alliance. So if the UK fails to act on an openskies, they can be called anti consumer and rightly so. I am sure there will be some kind of action on more access to LHR in the weeks ahead. Hopefully by years end.

No they should allow the BA/AA alliance go ahead, plus scrapping bermuda 2 restrictions and finding a deal which both the UK and US find acceptable.

747firstclass - in all fairness tourist numbers have dropped for a number of reasons and I would be very surprised if any of them had anything to do with Bermuda II.

1. Foot and Mouth outbreak
2. September 11th.
3. War on Terrorism

to name but a few.

However what I would like to know is how many other direct transatlantic routes have more than 4 competitors? Does Frankfurt have more than 4 airlines flying direct to New York??

Cheers in advance

RickB.

The question should be how many carriers fly from the U.S. to FRA. The answer would be any U.S. or German carrier that wants to. The same holds true to CDG,AMS,MAD,MUC, etc.

It does not hold true to LHR where only 4 carriers are allowed.

The following carriers fly to FRA from the U.S. ie Delta, Northwest, American, United, Continental, U.S. Airways, Lufthansa, Condor, Fedex, ATA, World.

Yes, indeed there are more than 4 carriers that fly from FRA-USA.
I did not mean to imply that Bermuda II has cause the drop in tourism in the UK. However, faced with such a drop it should motivate the UK to do something to encourage tourism. An openskies with the US could help along those lines. It would bring lower air fares and encourage more people to travel etc. Over and over againt has showen to be extremely effective in promoting tourism with countires that the US has openskies agreement with.

however can those airlines pick up passengers from LHR and fly them to the US? Here's another question, lets say ATA needed to fly a military charter to LHR, like they had no other choice would they be able to do it?

Also mentioned before about airlines serving the US-FRA market, technically World and ATA don't serve that market because they mainly fly the route for military charters or some other kind of charter. They don't have scheduled operations
