DL MD-90 Future?

Sun Nov 03, 2002 4:57 pm

What will happen with DL's MD-90's. I am a little bit surprised that they're still in the fleet. But for how long?

Probably for as long as DL keeps its MD-80s. They are basically the same aircraft, just re-engined and with the flight instrumentation of a more modern aircraft. And since combined there are over 100 MD-80/90s in DLs fleet, they will likely remain for another five to ten years.

Despite some initial service reliability problems, I have read that DL is now happy with the MD-90 performance. It's only "risk" is its small fleet size (only 16 aircraft). I predict the MD-90 will be retired before the MD-88 before still not for 5-10 years.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

My understanding is the MD90 and MD88 are between 50% and 75% different, despite appearances. However, they probably will be in the fleet for some time due to the fact that they just completed their first overhaul. Also, they are very quiet, which is important for airports like Orange County.

It will be interesting to see whether or Delta will retire all its 737-200s and -300s before the MD-90s. The 727s are nearly gone and the MD-11s are next!

GT1-
IF the fleet has completed it's overhaul recently, then why is only one airframe in the new paint scheme? That leads me to believe that Delta has already decided that the MD-90 won't be around long enough to repaint, OR that they are not yet sure. Have you seen the paint on those planes!? They look horrible!

Didn't SAS want to take up the 16 DL MD-90's at a stage?
Somehow I can't imagine that DL wants to keep a fleet of 16 frames in it's fleet while they are cutting costs at every possible corner. The drastical way they are doing this at more than just one American airline shows that nothing can feel safe with the airlines at the moment.

I think SAS was looking for some MD-90's, but I don't see that coming now, because they are planning to ground 40 aircraft. Anyway, I'd love to see more of the MD-90, sure a nice plane.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they have a common type rating...

I agree with AA737. If Delta was planning on keeping them for longer, why aren't they being repainted at the same speed as the MD88s?

Also, why did they place such a small order for them? Sixteen seems like a strange number to me.

IIRC, Delta had a huge MD90 order initially set up, but later cancelled and converted it to other models. I'm sure someone else has the details.

Yes, orginally the MD-90 was to be Delta's 727 replacement.

Yes the MD-90 as almost through with their first HMV cycle. 9215 is in right now and should be out by the end of the week. We only have one more left to overhaul and then we will go back to MD88 work. We don't paint the planes at HMV so that partially explains the old CS. My personal opinion is we will never do a second HMV on the 90 fleet. That gives them five years before they start getting rid of them.
