AA 757 Flying DFW-DTW-FLL

Mon Nov 04, 2002 2:37 am

I just looked on flytecomm.com and saw that there is an AA 757 flying from Dallas to Detroit then to Fort Lauderdale.

First of all, its been a long time since I have seen AA fly 757s to DTW, at least before 9-11. The other is, I didn't think AA flew between DTW and Fort Lauderdale, they fly to Miami from DTW.

Now I thought sports charter- because two Dallas teams are playing in Detroit today- Dallas Cowboys against the Lions and Dallas Stars against the Red Wings.

Well the AA 757 is arriving shortly after 2pm, so that is an hour too late to be the Cowboys since the game starts at 1pm.

I thought perhaps that after Dallas Stars play Red Wings, maybe they are flying to Fort Lauderdale to play the Florida Panthers, didnt see a Stars schedule. But see that the 757 is leaving DTW at around 4:30, the hockey game doesnt start till 7pm here.

Could it be that the 757 is dropping off the Stars, then flying to FLL for another charter?

I thought though that...

Dallas Stars had their own aircraft like the Red Wings a DC-9
Also, usually sports charters usually fly the team to the opponents city a day before the game, not just a couple hours before.

Could be just repositioning to FLL for a regular flight too. I thought that most charters don't stick around to take the teams back.

The 757 is probably dropping off the Stars and then repositioning to FLL.

It was a charter. Certain agents were assigned to meet and work that flight and guidelines for the flight while it was in DTW were very strict.

AA has had a 757 in DTW a few times as a 737 sub. to ORD.

There hasn't scheduled AA 757 into DTW in years. Not since the Mid-90's on DTW-ORD. Back when the 757's we first introduced to AA's fleet in 1989, DTW-ORD was one of the first routes the 757's flew on. Interesting DTW is one of AA's cities that get to see the newest equipment in AA's fleet when they come on line. When the 738's were brand new in 1999, they showed up on DTW-ORD runs within two months on introduction.

I was seeing them frequently in the morning during the summer of 1999 for a while, might have been some heavier loads at that time. I saw them once or twice come in during summer 2001, but havent seen them back since 9/11

I very seriously doubt that it was the Stars on the 757. 99% of the time an NHL team will arrive in city of the game the afternoon before the night of the game. Even if the team is playing a game one night and then has a game the next night they will always fly out right after the game to get to their destination city very early the next morning. The problem is the equipment, the equipment guys must set up the jerseys and equipment in the locker room, sharpen skates. Also trainers try to avoid something like this because a flight tends to keep the players sitting in one spot for long periods of time and tightens them up for game night. Coaches dont like it either because it gets the players minds off of the game that they are about to play. I guarantee you it wasnt the Stars charter. I probably saw that 757 depart this morning while I was spotting at DFW. If you want to know more about sports travel, I highly recommend this book, "Life on the Road" by Howard Berger as he chronicles his travels with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Very few sports teams travel commercially though, although they do charter from airlines. For example, the Islanders often charter with Midwest Express (mostly M80s) and it is not odd to see an MKE-ISP-(whatever city they are playing in)-MKE on the flight tracker.

**I found out this morning from the agent who met the flight.. it was the Dallas Cowboys that came in (that's who Emmitt Smith plays for.. right?).**

The flight arrived around 2pm at DTW, at least the one with the 757 I saw. At 2pm, the Lions or the cowboys were still tied 0-0 somewhere in the 2nd quarter, and most likely one of either teams kickers was punting the ball away again. It could NOT have been the Cowboys. The flight was supposed to leave DTW around 5-6pm, now it could have been leaving with the Cowboys, but I doubt they were going to Fort Lauderdale.

I agree, I doubt the Dallas Stars would fly in just a few hours before the game, unless there was a problem with the plane. I thought the Stars had their own plane anyway. The Redwings when playing back to back games in other cities will take off right after their game the first night and get to the next city that night, although the Wings have their own plane.

Does anyone know any details about the Red Wings DC-9-50? I know it is an ex TWA aircraft. Does it have the range to fly DTW-LAX or DTW-San Jose? I always wondered can the Red Wings fly directly from Detroit to Los Angeles when playing the Kings or do they have to refuel somewhere. I thought DC-9s did not have the range, I know MD-80s do.

The aircraft came in on Saturday to bring the Cowboy's.. whether or not it was positioned elsewhere after the charter, I don't know (most likely). Then Sunday, the aircraft came back and in the evening, the Cowboy's boarded and departed DTW. This should solve it.

Check out the Apple Vacations (Aer Lingus) 737 parked next to Berry. It was still there when I left work at 10am.
