BA LHR-SAN/PHX/DEN Status?

Tue Nov 05, 2002 8:27 am

I tried to search for this, but didn't find anything. I admit that I'm not that good at searching though, so sorry if this has been discussed. Did British Airways switch their DEN, SAN, and PHX services from LGW to LHR? If so, what turned out to be the reason that they could? Was it a loopwhole in Bermuda II, or is BII going to be abolished?

I know that Speed Bird 289/288 out of PHX is still LGW. However the switch to LHR should not be to far off in the future. I believe its the same with SAN/DEN as well.

I have a friend who booked a ticket for January '03 for SAN-LHR on a 777, so it might be Jan 1, but I'm not sure.
My posts/replies are strictly my opinion and not that of any company, organization, or Southwest Airlines.

One way or another, BA has found a way through Bermuda 2 restrictions, so SAN,DEN and PHX will most likely be served from LHR. Why and how this loophole was not exploited before i don't know.

Thanks you all! I thought that those services were due to start at the end of October (the 26th rings a bell in my head for some reason). Obviously they didn't though. But when?

wow, i just realized that. How did BA do it? Especially with little or no publication about it. Why haven't we heard anything about the B2 agreement. Because to us it just looks like BA just wanted to switch these 3 cities and went ahead and did so, disregarding any prior agreements. Now, i know thats probably not what happened, but what else can explain this?

There is a line in Bermuda II that syas that a British carrier may serve a Us city from LGW orLHR, provided there is no american carrier serving those cities. It meniotns specific cities that are allowed service from LHr and LGW. Anything above and beyond that may be served from LHR. Why BA did not figure this one out long before now is beyond me. It also explains why the BA no stop flights LGW-ATL, IAH and DFW will remain at LGW until Bermuda II is amended or better yet done away with.

Usairways85,
No AA can not transfer RDU from LGW to LHR and UA can not start service from LHR-DEN. The British carriers only can have service from etiher LHR or LGW and than only to certain cities. The cities that can have LHR service via US carriers is specifically mentioned in Bermuda II. I know this sounds rather confusing and it is indeed is. Just one of the many reasons that Bermuda Ii needs to be the junk pile----pronto and why openskies is best for all.

No, I believe it means that BA can serve any US city to LHR if there's no American carrier providing service to LGW from that city.

For example, as long as there's no American airline serving PHX-LHR/LGW, British Airways can do PHX-LHR.

But if CO starts up PHX-LGW service, for example, BA will have to revert to LGW service as well (in other words, they can only exercise the LHR "advantage" if there's no competition).

BA would love to move DFW, ATL and IAH to LHR but as mentioned above they can't. Could you imagine the uproar from DL, CO and AA if they moved those three to LHR.

Oh Boy!!!!!
