Egyptair 767 Down Near Nantucket

Sun Oct 31, 1999 7:29 pm

I've just been visiting Yahoo! Aviation clubs and see that an Egyptair 767 is down near Massachussetts. The aircraft was en route from JFK to Cairo. CNN reports the basic facts. The search is going on and the story is still unfolding.
Egyptair has two 767s remaining, both -300s (the others have left the fleet, two with SAA I think). Looking at the JP, they were the 275th (SU-GAO) and 282nd (SU-GAP) off the line in August and Sep '89.

The 767 was operating flight MS 990, scheduled to leave JFK at 2300. CNN reports that contact was lost 60 miles s. of Nantucket (about 200 miles e. of JFK). at 2.15 am, which suggest that the aircraft was quite seriously delayed.

The aircraft was carrying 197 passengers (which presumably includes crews - the media almost always get this wrong) and had in fact been delayed for two hours. This was due to weather, not any technical problem.

The aircraft was indeed carrying 197 passengers, but also a crew of 15. (This would have included a third, relief, pilot, and 12 cabin crew.)

On a personal note, I'm wondering if the difference between the passenger numbers (197 -v- 199) could be related to very young children. While not wanting to understate the tragedy for ANYONE involved in a fatal plane crash, it is all the more tragic when such young children and babies are involved. One can hardly imagine the sheer terror of the children and the parents trying to comfort them as an aircraft goes down in such circumstances.
