Airborne At CMH

Wed Nov 06, 2002 9:26 pm

For those of you who live in Columbus, OH, I have a question I would like to ask you. I always see an old Airborne Express sitting on the tarmac near the runway at CMH. I am not sure what type of aircraft it is since I am not a big fan of vintage airplanes. Do you know why the plane is there? Is it a traning aircraft for fiireman or police? Thanks!!

It's an old Caravelle that used to be parked at the airport museum (torn down to build the Hilton). Word had it that the plane would be used for fire training, but I'm not sure if that has taken place.

I remember it used to be over on the North tarmac near the old air museum. I don't think they know what they want to do with it.

I see it there all the time hope they're not gonna mess it up. I'd be curious to find out whether or not it's still airworthy, considering the only time its been moved was when they took it away from the museum.

As previously stated, the Airborne Express Sud-Caravelle was moved to the cargo ramp on the southeast part of the airport when the old aviation museum was torn down to make way for the Hilton. I had previously heard that it was to be gutted for firefighting training, however it remains there gathering dust. The Ohio Historical Center is supposed to be opening an aviation exhibit, which is where most of the aircraft from the musuem will be displayed. I doubt there are any plans to feature the Caravelle there.

Here's a photo from the aircraft's days back at the museum. If you do a search for Sud Caravelle and Airborne Express, you'll there are actually quite a few parked at airports around the country.
