SFO To Tokyo, Northwest Flight 27. Equip?

Fri Nov 08, 2002 10:48 am

Hey all,

On the 18th of December I will be flying to SFO from YYC on United and then on Northwest Airlines flight 27 from SFO to Tokyo, and then from Tokyo to Kaohsiung, Taiwan on Northwest airlines flight 9. On my itinerary it says I'll be on a 747 for SFO to Tokyo, and an Airbus from Tokyo to Kaohsiung. I'm curious as to what series of 747 this flight is operated with and also what type of Airbus (I'm assuming A320?).

I'll be doing the same route on the return flight as well only I'll have 12 hours to kill in SFO before returning to YYC. Anything I should check out?

Thanks,
Kris from YYC  Smile

747-200 on SFO-NRT
A320 on NRT-KHH

depending on what hours you are at SFO there is a little airline museum with quite a library

Normally NW27 is a 747-200, but someone on a previous post

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/960290/

has said that NW27's operating a DC-10-30 right now due to a shortage of crews for the 747's.

NW uses their older-model 747-200's for most of their Asian routes.

I was at SFO about 2 weeks ago, and strangely enough, it was a DC-10-30 operating the SFO-NRT flight that day.

NW normally uses 747-200 equip for the SFO-NRT route. Currently they are using a DC-10-30. NW pulled the 747-200 to use it for cargo ops due to the the west coast shipping shutdown/slowdown. Auto manufactures and others are paying for air shipments to keep assembly production from stopping.
NW uses A-320's to fly there NRT-KHH, PUS and TPE routes.

During the past several days, NWA has used mostly DC10's on the flight, but there was one day where it operated with a 747-200. The flight is still scheduled with the 747-200 everyday. Not sure what the status will be a month from now.

The range of the 320 is around 3,000 miles or so. The a/c is capable of flying US transcons as well as SFO-HNL as proven by NW during the ferry flights for these 320s to get to NRT. Do you realy think NW would be flying these routes with the 320 if it didn't have the range?

Just as an aside, this post reminds me of one of my first commercial flights.

I flew NW #27 from Memphis to San Francisco about 13 years ago. At that time it was a B727 with a change of aircraft type at SFO before continuing to Tokyo. I have no idea if this first leg from MEM to SFO still exists.

I made a Typo in my original post, it should say November 20th. I come back on Dec. 18th. Also my travel agent changed things to save me like $400 CAD. I'm now flying NW to MSP then from MSP to NRT on a NW 744. Then from NRT to Kaohsiung (KHH) on a NW A320. The way back it'll be a NW A320 from KHH to NRT, then a NW 742 from NRT to SEA. The final leg will be SEA to YYC on a Horizon Dash8 Q400. It's nice to have a turboprop in here  Smile

Thanks again for the info, I'll write a trip report when I get back.
