Sorry:Continental May Establish A New Hub In Sju!

Sat Nov 09, 2002 10:34 am

Puerto Rico’s daily newspaper, El Nuevo Dia, reported today the more than likely possibility of Caribbean Airlines establishing rutes to and from San Juan. Furthermore, and even more shoking, Continental Express may establish flights as soon as January. Does this mean Continental may plan a major expansion at San Juan??? Does anyone know anything?

If CO sends a few small airplanes over each day, that does not make San Juan a hub as you state in the topic. Chicago is a hub to UA, Atlanta to DL, etc.

Why do you say "Sorry"? I don´t get your statement. Nevertheless, I agree with DutchDeltaDude.

This has been a rumor at Continental for many years. I worked for Continental and System One Amadeus doing training in SJU back in 97-98 and this rumor was already going around.

CO would need to dedicate many aircraft and resources to make SJU into a hub so that it can effectively compete with AA.

A few questions/comments on CO's possible plans: (My opinions)

Continental Express with a "hub" in SJU- wouldn't that compete with AA Eagle, who already is well established there & kill airlines like Cape Air? Would they send props or ERJs? (Does CO still have props? I'm not sure.)

I can see CO putting a mini-hub in SJU- it seems like there's plenty of gate space in that concourse, there was/is a CO lounge ("President's Club", is it?) there, but as Prinair said, they'd need to base a ton of stuff there to hold a candle to AA.

What about Gulfstream? Does CO still have the codeshare with them using Beech 1900s inter-island that they did a few years ago & this would run under the CO Express branding?

DutchDelta-
by definition, a hub is a location wherein passengers make scheduled connections between incoming/outgoing flights in order to reach an ultimate destination.... so technically, if CO did schedule a few connections in and out of SJU, then yes, it would be a hub. ATL/ORD/DFW just happen to be superlative examples of hubs, but one can even say that US has a hub at MSY for the sake of technicality.

everyone-
rumors have abounded for YEARS that CO plans to initiate some form of hubbing in either FLL or SJU. I'd pay this one no heed until I heard it from the horse's mouth.

I do know that AMR(American Airlines parent company) has sold Executive Airlines, which operates as American Eagle in MIA and SJU, to help get Domestic American Eagle around The ASM cap that the American pilot union has in their contract. Any airplane that is flow by American Eagle has to be under so many seats. Executive is suposed to fly as an American Connection now. I wonder if Continental Express or Continental is thinking about moving in SJU because of this or maybe buying Executive Airlines???????

Executive will still be exclusive American Connection carrier and only a codeshare with America. Its being sold back to its previous owners I believe. No, it will not ever become anything to do with Continental / CO Express.

I have a hard time believing there is the market for two airlines to operate "Hubs" in SJU. RJ's don't make sense on such routes on the interislands from SJU. Low-yielding routes, more suited for turboprops. We all know how much CO loves their RJ's in other places such as CLE.

About Continental establishng a hub in SJU I have no clue - but yes there are rumors that Continetal Express and Caribbean Star might start flying to San Juan. In the article it is stated that CoEx might start in January with Reginal jets instead of turbopros. About Continetal making San Juan a hub I very much doubt it, they are a recognized airline in the markets they serve out of SJU but AA still has a complete domination out of San Juan.

Rumor is that a low cost carrier (well actually two) are looking to make SJU a focus city.

Could be interesting in SJU....

There has been a rumor in Puerto Rico that JetBlue is looking at SJU to maybe make it a focus city, the only other two low fare airlines at San Juan are ATA and Spirit and I doubt that any of those two airlines are looking to make SJU a focus city. Spirit currently flies nonstop from SJU to MCO and FLL, ATA flies nonstop from SJU to MDW, MCO and MIA. Not only would SJU be very interesting if another airline adds more flights but fares would also go down.

Well supposedly JetBlue was looking at PSE- but nothing has been mentioned since then, before Spirit started service to SJU they were interested in BQN- but like most other airlines they went with SJU instead. With Vieques and Culebra - AAEagle has been interested in flying between SJU and Vieques and Culebra but Vieques Air Link, Flamenco Airways and the other local airlines are trying to keep AAEagle away from the neighboring Puerto Rican islands. Caribbean Star which is interested in flying to San Juan has also said that they are interested in flying between SJU and Vieques and Culebra but because of cabotage they are trying to negotiate with the govt.
The only airline currently flying scheduled service to BQN is CO from Newark.

Chepos,

While I agree that on the surface your argument makes sense. I think you will agree that I do not post often but, When I do there is generally a bit of truth to it.

I can confirm that there are TWO low fare carriers examining the near term prospects of an SJU focus city. They are looking at Caribbean growth and have identified aircraft that will be flying in it. They are looking at SJU and other cities and SJU is in the lead.

As far as anything more specific. I am obligated not to disclose due to the standard operating non disclosure agreements.

I understand the non diasclosure agree, ments, but is there any way of you telling us approximately when we will know the names and plans of any of this airlines?

Also..is there any other info you can provide on this or on future expansion at any of the PR airports?

Thank you
