What Is The Latest On Air Namibia?!?

Sat Nov 09, 2002 9:44 pm

First Air Namibia sent it's 744 to AMS for maintenance and replaced it for the time being by a Novair A330-200 and then the 744 was seen in an all white livery followed by the information that that plane would go to Air Gabon and that they wanted to keep the A332.

What is the latest on this? Are there any pictures of the A330 in FRA or LHR?

Which routes did SW fly with the 744 besides WDH-FRA-(LHR)?

Due to their financial trouble SW planned to sell their expensive 744 and replace it by A330 or B767.

Seems that they did the first step.  Sad

Didn't SW make it's first profit this year? It seems kinda hard to believe since I sat in a basically empty airplane of theirs but I guess you can't add up one flight to the whole systam...

Godbless,

In the last issue of Aero International, there was an article about Air Namibia. Doesn't look good for the airline, even the article was named: "Kleine Airline mit großen Problemen" (translated from german: "A small airline with big problems")

It´s obviously that the 744 is too big for this small airline. Other comparable airlines use smaller aircraft (GH for example). SW is not able to react on lower demand. If there would be enough demand, they would have more long haul aircraft. But I think this is not necessary for this country. And for one half full 744 the running expenses are too high. The new management of SW seems to know that.

I wonder what the use of the Novair A330 will do to Air Namibia's reputation ("First Class World Class").
Of course it's a decent airline and aircraft, but the high-density layout (372 seats, unless they changed it) will hardly be appreciated on a ten-hour flight, especially since Namibia doesn't draw the average tourist.

With so many A330s/340s currently available, I wonder why they don't move for one.

I had heard a rumor a while ago (so it is pretty old now) that management would let the airline be bought by SAA, and turned into an Airlink subsidiary a la Airlink Zambia, using ERJs and simply dropping the long-haul flights. However, with SAA's cancellation of the remainder of its ERJ order, I doubt this will happen.

Perhaps the 744 was more a social / political move by government officials to make Namibia feel proud ...

I think traffic/business wise they are totally over shadowed by AF and KL/KQ Africa operations by now ..

Neither AF nor KL offer WDH services. AF and KL are more focused on Central Africa.
I think the WDH-Europe service is viable, and besides LTU they are the only airline to offer nonstops. It's just that the scale of operations of the whole airline is too small.

Neither AF nor KL offer WDH services.

The fact those two carrier, who offer a lot of destinations there, don't offer WDH provides a weak starting point for 747-400 flights ...

Depends on which view you come from.
Either the market is really small, then you're right, or it is big enough for one 744 Combi, rather than two smaller ones.

However, the maindeck cargo was quite full when I flew on them: there were three cars being unloaded following the WDH-FRA flight. And it´s safe to assume, this was not cheap...

Does SW still codeshare with LTU on their WDH flights?
I remember a few years back reading in "Aero" that they were codesharing. From where does LTU fly to WDH? Isn't that MUC and didn't SW fly to MUC to a year or so ago, so the demand must be there somewhere as said above not enough for a 74M. How is the cargospace on an A332?

LTU serves DUS-MUC-WDH 1x weekly and with the FRA service of SW this must be enough from germany. Look at the small network of domestic flights in Namibia. It´s obviously that the demand isn´t very high. Even small airlines have to choose their aircraft in view of economy. If the 744 is too big, it can ruin the the airline quickly (I assume that they compete on long haul flights from Germany with LH and SA which serve JNB).

The SW-744 was a pretty bird, but better they replace it by a smaller aircraft if they save the airline from bankruptcy.
