BUR (Burbank) - No New Terminal

Sun Nov 10, 2002 3:02 am

The Burbank Airport Authority voted yesterday to drop plans for a new terminal to replace the current complex. The new terminal has long been tied up as area residents attempted to tie building a new complex to imposing nighttime curfews. The FAA has wanted the terminal replaced since the existing building sits only 300 feet from a runway centerline.

This may turn out to be only the latest chapter not the final word. Behind the scenes politics may still be going on.

Various media stories on Friday's decision:

RE: BUR (Burbank) - No New Terminal

I'm not surprised, Burbank has quite a few NIMBY'S, leave it to some jerks to ruin the possibility of expanded ops at BUR because they can't a hear a few minutes of Survivor what a bunch of crap. BUR is long overdue for a change, although I personally have no problem with the current terminal and how it's set up, let's face it, something better can be built. This also goes to show the selfishness of those who oppose the new terminal, although it would no guarantee that Burbank would get more connections to more cities because of a new terminal, it was a possibility and might have given some relief to the growing problem with not having enough gate space at other L.A. area airports, which has been discussed on this forum many times. I find this news sad and hopefully, eventually BUR will get it's new terminal..., well I can dream can't I?

I'd rather see increased service than a new terminal, in any case. So hopefully airlines will work what they can with the existing facilities.

I agree that increased service is more important than a new terminal, but every little bit helps.

On a similar note has anyone heard of increased service at BUR, besides Aloha?

Aloha is adding a BUR-OGG flight in February. DB Air charter airline is supposed to start BUR-JFK in December but for now I'll call them "Don't Bet" on it Air!

Other BUR news...AA is down to 3 daily flights to DFW, cutting back to 2 a day after the 1st of the year. The morning UA flight to DEN is now a A319, which is the first time UA's brought Airbus equipment to BUR.

When I worked for Los Angeles County Aviation Division from 1984 to 1987, I represented the County at numerous BUR Noise Committee Meetings, and the plans for a new terminal was an often discussed topic. That was over 15 years ago, and the thing still hasn't been built, or even approved, and from the above, appears that it might not ever.

Leave it to the NIMBY's, enviromentalists, and the bureaucrats (I can say that: I'm both originally from LA, and I work for city government at MSY) of California to screw up and either forever delay (as they did with the 210 Freeway extension), or terminate a project. No wonder nothing gets done in California in a logical length of time.

I've wasted too many of my already limited number of brain cells on the BUR terminal issue. If the locals want keep using that old relic (although it does have a certain charm and history to it), so be it. I'll keep on flying into ONT or SAN to see my family.

Fortunately, they seem to live mainly in the coastal areas around LA and the Bay Area.

California has become a state split into East and West instead of North and South. Much of what people consider California to be about is true along the coast but not the inland areas. High housing costs, freeway traffic jams, NIMBYism, etc. originates in Western California. For example, Gray Davis (the more liberal of the major candidates) was reelected governor last week. But look at how the counties voted:
http://vote2002.ss.ca.gov/Returns/gov/mapB.htm
He carried almost no counties east of the coastal mountains. Same thing happened in 2000 with Bush/Gore.
http://vote2000.ss.ca.gov/Returns/pres/mapA1A.htm

Those wanting to do business in California are realizing the inland areas are the new growth areas. Also, families pushed out by high housing costs are now moving inland. Yes, we're subject to some of those state laws passed by the coastal areas, but less of the local craziness found in Western California.
