We had some pretty bad thunder showers so perhaps it was diverted for that reason?  Confused
I like British Airways! I'm not sure why, but I do! ;-)

YYZ was experiencing bad lightning and thunder showers between approx. 1830 and 2030 hrs, so I guess there were some diversions as a result of that. Most aircraft could circle for a while, but the HKG-YYZ went nonstop as of last week and the 343 is hurting for fuel after that long.

Just for the record, CX 828 is completing the YOW-YYZ sector with a 0328hrs departure from YOW and a 0415hrs arrival at YYZ. I guess YYZ-ANC-HKG will now depart around 0800hrs.

Awspicious and I were at YYZ last night to see all of the actions....the lightening was spectacular.....so many pilots were complaining on the radio....apparently the LH 340 told ATC that he was turning this way......and that caues a big problem in the air.....the ATC was scrambling around to divert other aircraft.....there was some major turbalance......A buddy who was flying last night said the ride was alright....he was coming from New York....LGA and said he had a 1.5h wait for a gate....we didn't see malev last night either..??

Oh they were diverting planes to YUL, YOW, YHM and ever BUF last night....I think a total of 13 aircraft were put on the ground somewhere other than YYZ...

I'm sure Red Panda can clarify this, but based on other reports from CX, their schedule is in a mess right now thanks to the diversion.

My understanding of the situation is that the HKG-YYZ crew went illegal at YOW and as a result, CX had to send the crew scheduled to fly YYZ-ANC to Ottawa who then flew the aircraft YOW-YYZ arriving at 430am. Both crews were now illegal to operate, so the flight DID NOT OPERATE as of yet. The aircraft is still on ground at YYZ.

CX 829 of November 10 will operate at 2100hrs on November 11 using YYZ-ANC-HKG routing. CX 829 of November 11 will operate at 0130hrs on November 12 using YYZ-KIX-HKG routing. The reason for the routing through KIX is that the crew supposed to pick up the flight in ANC to operate ANC-HKG is still stuck in YYZ, so an alternate crew will pick up the flight for the KIX-HKG leg.

Amen. They barely got HXN back in service after her flameout on YYZ-ANC about 2 weeks ago and subsequent grounding at YVR. They wound up having to run regional configured 343s (no sleepers) to YYZ for a couple weeks as a result of that.

You would think YUL would be good for diversions......they have a huge empty ramp and a vastly under-utilized airport.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

B747-437B,
do you know which CX 343s don't have the sleepers as I think nearly all of them have been at LHR now and I can't imagine them sending the non-sleeper ones to LHR too frequently?(the ones leased from Air China?)

Darn, I missed it.  Sad Too bad it wasn't here for a state visit, so it would have been here a couple of days.

I was on B-HXD last month and she was in the regional config with 12-40-197 setup versus 8-30-205 on the longhaulers. I believe that there are 7 A340s in regional setup and 8 in longhaul setup. Again, someone more knowledgable (Cx_flyboy? Hkgspotter1? Red Panda?) can probably clarify.

The non-sleeper CX 343s are NOT leased from Air China. All three of the leased Air China aircraft were returned and all fifteen A340s in CX's fleet are in CX configuration with CX seats.

As I understand, the 34Cs (sleepers) are: HXA, HXB, HXE, HXF, HXI, HXL, HXM, HXN, HXO.

The 343s (no sleepers) are: HXC, HXD, HXG, HXH, HXJ, HXK.

It would appear that priority for 34C deployment would be given to Auckland and Toronto (and I would have thought Heathrow but apparently they're getting quite a few visits from the no sleepers A340s).

Yeah it was a pretty rough night in YYZ on Sunday, I was watching out my window and the lightning was spectacular for a November storm with the wind and rain. The planes were landing on 15 L during the storm as they fly over my house.

Ya landing on 15 and holding departures but a few departed 15L such as a BA 744, and a KLM, 743.....Awspicious and i were at the threshold of 23 listening to ATC and ATC was clearing them for an imediate right turn to 030 i think......or is it a 300 heading....what ever, they made a sharp turn north when just rotating.....to aviod the storm.....

I'd been working for more than thirteen hours non-stop yesterday. I didn't even have a chance to post anything here. But what Sean wrote in the above are all true. I can see he is very knowledgeable about our operations.
The flight diverted to YOW is B-HXI. The air crew from YYZ didn't arrive YOW until three something in the morning. One of our engineer and a load control also flied to YOW to pick up the a/c. It finally arrived YYZ at 04:15. However, due to curfield here at YYZ, the a/c was not allowed to depart. The curfield was up to 04:30 maximum. On Nov11, BHXI departed at 21:00 from T3 C34. On the same day, BHXL arrived at around 18:50 and was due to depart at 01:30 on nov12 to KIX. BHXI will arrive HKG at 05:10 and BHXL at 10:15 HKT.

I saw KLM tookoff and BA landing from T3 using rwy 15L. It was spectacular and a bit scary. After then, there were some small planes landed. The weather was at its worst when KLM tookoff.

I am now tired to death. Gotta get some sleep.

Not to brag but the first Cathay pushed at 21:10 and the second at 01:23 from T3 C31. I should know I worked on both flights and was on the push tug when they both left. We worked like dogs to get those done. I missed 828's late arrival the night before, I stayed until 0400 then left. I saw the KLM take off, all I can saw was WOW. Weather was killer that night.

Hey Red Panda are you going out on the fam trip on Wednesday night? I was next on the list but they ran out of seats.

No, I am not going. I know Michael (Ogden's customs hall) is going.
YES, it was amazing to see 747 takeoff and landing in heavy rain. I was surprised that tower still cleared them for the runway in heavy rain.

If you work down there in the ramp, then you know the exact time for the pushbacks. Well, I didn't.

Red Panda,

Heavy rain is not a limiting factor for takeoff or landing. However, it reduces the aircraft performance on takeoff weights, landing distance required, V speeds, due to standing water (wet runway).

The only time if an aircraft is denied for takeoff is if they shut down the ramp or there's severe windshear or downdrafts reported across the runway. Now that would be a safety issue.

Anyway, the GTAA Duty Mgr should have granted a more lenient / flexible departure curfew extension in view of such inclement weather conditions. What ended up happening is to have to put the crew to bed after coming in from YOW. That's why the flight had to wait for a 2115LT departure later that night. It's awlful!

Are you still working over there? I thought you are only there till Aug 31.

yeah, I am sitll working over there. Ths for the info about T/O and landing in heavy rain. After all, both KLM and BA are 747; as you said, they should be better performers in severe weather compared to Airbus.

So where are you now? Working for SSV?
