Top 10 Most Expensive Airports

Wed Nov 13, 2002 12:50 pm

Hi!

According to a note published by a newspaper in Mexico, the list is formed by...
(Newspaper Source: IATA)

1. Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT)
2. Osaka Kansai International Airpot (KIX)
3. Mexico City International Airport (MEX)
4. Monterrey "Mariano Escobedo" International Airport (MTY)
5. Guadalajara "Miguel Hidalgo" International Airport (GDL)
6. Acapulco "Juan N. Alvárez" International Airport (ACA)
7. Cancun International Airport (CUN)
8. Merida International Airport (MID)
9. London Heathrow International Airport (LHR)
10. Bogota "El Dorado" International Airport (BOG)

Airlines pay for the use of runways, bridges, gates, platforms and ground services...
(I don't see the money reflected at least in the Mexican airports)

Also... Mexico charges a tax for the use of airports... (Included in the fare of the ticket) so if you...

...are travelling in a domestic flight then you pay for using the airport... $ 20.00 USD.

...are travelling in a international flight then you pay for using the airport... $ 9.00 USD.

So you pay more taxes in a MEX-GDL-MEX ticket (domestic) than in a MEX-CDG-MEX. (international)

Most interesting post.....thanks for the valuable information. Tokyo,Osaka and London seem to make alot of sense here but i am perplexed why are the rest South American airports.....most of them small ones???? What reason do they have to charge this much....more then airports like CDG and FRA. I know where Cancun,MEX and Bogota are but can you please tell me in what countries are the rest of the cities located in?

I've read somewhere that LCY is one of the most expensive airports in Europe, can someone confirm this?

What does it say? Every pax flying out of PNH (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) on an Intl flight has to pay 20 USD and domestic flights they charge 10 USD?

As far as I know you pay in Japan only for Intl Departures, when I flew from KIX to HND I didn't have to pay any taxes.

A lot of airports have high pax charges ..

Joaquin,

I was also impressed when I read the list in the newspaper!!!

The list was published in the newspapers because the Mexican airports have profits of around 20%, since they are aloud to establish their own fees. The Mexican government (ministry of communications and transportation) wants to change this because airports in other countries only have profits of around 6 - 8%. And if you add that airports in Mexico don't have the standards of US or European airports, this only makes our airline industry too expensive.

What you said about taxes being lower on international flights than on domestic flights is true, the TUA is lower and the VAT or IVA in spanish is also lower. On a domestic flight you pay a 15% VAT for all non border cities and for border cities and international flights you have to pay between 2.5% and 10%. This is quite unfair, but it is the reality in the Mexican airline industry and it is why it is so difficult for new airlines to start operating in Mexico.

Swissgabe:
The tax of $ 20.00 USD and $ 9.00 USD for using the airport, only works for Mexico... I don't know if Phnom Penh or Hong Kong or whatever works the same with taxes.

KHI747:
I don't have idea why Mexico's fees are so high... But ticket fares in Mexico for domestic flights sometimes can be higher than in an international flight..

Wonder if HND will make that list, as the ministry is [supposedly] considering switching all intra-Asian international flights back to that airport with the opening of its new international arrivals and customs facilities... but pending reconfiguration/construction of runways? Seems raising HND would aid in offsetting some of the costs of NRT.

As far as I know even CI moved to NRT now so there are NO intl flts anymore at HND. I don't think that HND has the capacity to handle more flights, isn't it?

I wonder if they are going to build a New-New Tokyo Intl Airport. New Tokyo Intl Airport is still NRT ...

When I saw this thread heading I thought it was going to be about the respective prices of beer, smokes, food etc.

Now that would be an interesting survey, my vote for biggest bandits would be LHR ! Narita is actually reasonable for the essentials of life.

Well..when flying from or to my home base Amsterdam Airport Schiphol...you have to pay at least 45 USD tax on each return ticket. An extra security tax (thanks to 9/11) is included, but I haven't noticed any change on security items since years. Which make me wonder where this extra security tax is used for.

When you fly out of Canada to USA you have to pay something like $10USD!!!
I was flying YUL-DCA and before I even cleared the customs they made me pay $10 (it was in 1997 or 1998).
Is it for all Canadian traffic to USA or just from YUL airport?

This shows the reality of our Airline Industry, I'm impressed but I did suspect that our airports are one of the most expensive in the world, but their service is FAAAAAAAAAAR away of NRT, and LHR. Sad.  Sad

I guess the issue here is not how expensive Mexican airport fees are. Lets face it, other that MEX and CUN, its not like tons of international airlines fly to MID, MTY, etc, and Mexican airlines, well they have to live with it. As for MEX and CUN, it is obvious to me that the fees are not stopping international airlines from flying there. Evidently the revenue they get more than compensates for the high fees.

The real issue, IMHO, is where the amounts of those fees are being applied. Honestly, do you see any REAL improvements in any of the listed airports? If you do, please let me know!!

Take MTY for example (high up there at no. 4 in the list). Yes, the whole terminal has been "renovated", meaning they just changed the looks of it but really no major improvement. The satellite where the gates are is still a dump, even with the new seats at the gates. If frankly looks old. Now, I know they are working on the runway now (by the way, quite fun to take off on a full 757 with the shortened runway, I just did it last Monday!), but that is something that any airport has to do from time to time, it's nothing spectacular really. But other than that, nothing. New runway? Expanded terminal? New services? Nada!. It makes me wonder then, where is all the money? I'm led to believe that either there is a hole in the pocket or it is just bad management, but let's give the benefit of the doubt; but then what is going on? Maybe high costs? I just want to understand, can someone explain?

Lindy , 3 months ago when we flew from YUL-ATL we had to pay the 10 dollar fee (each) ...apparently its an airport improvement tax...but a big portion of our tickets was tax in the first place...I think the tax is unique to YUL though

For sure MTY is a intersting case, maybe the problem is that they are now private companies, and since a private company want (obously) profits, well, they want their money back, ASAP. Maybe that's a reason.

Smokes, Bier....

Thu Nov 14, 2002 1:48 pm

You want an expensive airport for the other stuff like food, bier, smokes and so on... try ZRH (with the exception os Duty Free) It's funny how much some stuff costs, and how much some people are willing to pay. I can get the same Bar of Chocolate at Waro or Coop (both regular stores) in Zurich (city) for CHf 1.20 (about 80 US cents) and at ZRH its like CHf 4.60 (about 3 USD.) Thats a whopping 383% markup  Smile

The most ridiculous thing is, i.e. duty free at LHR...
People are buying a bottle of Johnny Walker to bring to friends in USA...
They have to carry the bottle... to destination...
Only to find out that stores in USA sell them 25-33% cheaper...
Duty free - yes - but not profit free...

Swissgabe,

yes, I know about the transfer, but that has nothing to do with this case. According to the New Tokyo Airport Authority, should Tokyo International Airport at Haneda receive permission to extend 2 of its existing runways and/or receive permission for another runway by 2004-2008 time frame; then among the agenda would be to transfer most intra-Australasian flights from New Tokyo International at Narita... therefore allowing the latter to concentrate on European and N. American flights.

Some say this move would be in an effort to expand available capacity at NRT should Japan decide to follow the model of open skies agreements struck between Europe and the USA during the late 90s. Nothing it set in stone at this point.

YVR has an airport improvement tax on all originating flights. It's $10 Cdn local, $15 for international. Ticks people right off -- but they do put the money to good use. YVR is one of the most attractive airports in North America. I'd sooner pay the tax up front than have it buried in the ticket price like all the other taxes.
Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

I know that Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) charges a US$35.00 airport fee for international flights, I would imagine that the rest of the Brazilian airport network (INFRAERO) charges the same thing. I'm not sure if domestic flights have a fee as well.

Thanks for the details. Anyway, I would prefer to fly from HND iso NRT. Both airports are not that nice but HND is much easier to get downtown nearly everywhere around Tokyo ...

The mexican government wants the groups who manage the mexican airports to invest more on the terminals, but they concentrate on profits...

Here are some lines on this issue that appear on today's newspaper:

Ah yes, the old Mexican proverb, "poor company, rich owners" applies perfectly. So my question is answered, Mexican airports do have a hole in their pocket, whether legal or not.

In CCS (Simón Bolívar Itl. Airport, Caracas, Venezuela) you must pay US$30.oo for travelling outside the country if you're venezuelan & US$15,oo if you're foreigner... the service is the worst I've ever seen... but to get out of Chavez & those lunatics is OK to pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
