What The Heck Kind Of Plane Was That? Ksea

Thu Nov 14, 2002 8:29 am

Alright, I leave my apartment and hear a plane overhead. As I look up, I see your typical wing mounted twin engine commercial jet. However, this particular plane had canards, or something that looked very much like canards. So, being the nerd that I am =), I went in and grabbed my scanner. I figured that he was on approach to KBFI because they usually vector them over my house for approaches there, but as I was scanning, KSEA tower's frequency came on and I'm pretty sure that I heard the pilot of that plane. He asked for the approach lights to be turned on. Then, (I cannot hear the towers response from where I live), he said that the PAPI would be ok.
I figured that this might be a FAA check plane, although I know that they use a smaller business jet to check ILS's. I did a search for 'canards', and only found a few planes, none of which looked even remotely like the plane that I saw. Anyone have any idea what just flew over my head?
I am pretty sure that the pilot used the call sign 'Test' or 'Check' I have kinda forgotten which.
Thanks,  Big grin

The aircraft that jumped to my mind when you said 'wing mounted engine with canards' was the Piaggio Avanti. But I'm assuming that's not what it was, so I'm lost.  Smile

Perhaps a 757 with the J star "wing" mounted over the cabin?

that sure does look an awful like what it was. Any idea why this might be flying around? I guess he probably was headed to BFI, that would make more sense given his altitude, flightpath etc. Thanks, I knew I would get the right answer here. I LOVE these forums.

Serge found what I was looking for--Thanks!

This aircraft was based at Renton when last I was in SEA. It is supposedly part of the F22 datalink testing, from what I was told.
