Most Uncreative Airline Name........

Sat Nov 16, 2002 5:56 am

Wednesday night, I drove by South Cargo @ ATL and I saw an a/c from an airline that in my opinion is the most boring, and uncreative airline name: Cargo Air Lines. Come on folks, couldn't you have come up with a better name than that?

A few years ago, I heard a rumour that British Airways wanted to get rid of their british image, they wanted to become a airline for the whole world - and so they wanted to drop the "British" in "British Airways", the new name of the airline should have been "Airways".

Good luck that they didn't!

Let's see:

American Airlines
Trump Shuttle
Airs Canada, India, et al
Japan Air Lines
Pulkovo Aviation (although I really like the name)
New York Air

The best airline name of all time:
(drumroll please)

When Scanair and Conair merged they formed Premiair (today MyTravel Airways). I think that the name was supposed to make people aim at something like "premium air" but, in Swedish, Premiair is pronounced exactly like "premiär" (first appearance, premiere and similar).
This was fun the first month(s), but an airline survives (hopefully) longer than that.

A few years before that, BA dropped the word Airways and wanted to be known just as "British", but they soon changed their mind when people confused them with " British Rail " " British Telecom " " British Waterways!!!"
" Cargo Air Lines" might sound boring, but at least you know what they do. Mind you there is no room for expansion with a name like that, because as soon as you start to carry passengers you have to change your name.
A lot of airline names seem boring to me and I regret the passing of the age when airline names were abbreviated such as KLM, SAS, BOAC, TWA etc.[ Before you all start I know KLM and SAS still exist]
Most stupid name, there are lots, but one that I really dislike is
"BMIBaby" or something like that, what the heck does it mean.

Creativity?

Air Algérie, Air France, Air India, Air Seychelles, Air Mauritius and so on....

Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Swiss Air Lines, South African Airlines......

Where do you see creativity in airlines' names?

There are only a few airlines with more original names, for instance Garuda, Sabena (...), El Al, Arkia, Khalifa, Maof, Lufthansa, Alitalia...

For a cargo airline, the name C.A.L- Cargo Air Lines is not so bad; but their livery...

well of course that is true however seeing you are from the US I think you know it is commonly referred to as "America" though that is technically incorrect...

For the same reason, you could dump Aer Lings. The name originates from the irish "Aer Loingeas", which translated means nothing but "Air Fleet"

Is the word "good" even a Swedish word? And how many Swedes actually know what that word stands for in English? Ive heard that only about 20-30% of the Swedish population actually knows English, and to name an airline "GoodJet" is just beyond me, especially in a non-english speaking country.

That's true Blink, airlines with the name of their country in their titles are generally better know.

As for crap names, "Buzz" get's that award, although it's unique, i don't see how this word relates to airlines or aviation.

Lufthansa is not German for airline, or German airline.

Luft means air.
Hansa means the Hanseatic league.

Deutsch is the German word for German!
Fluggesellschaft or Fluglinie (I've read that), is the German word for airline.

deutsche Fluggesellschaft would be "german airline".

Cheers,

Justin

Pmk ,how about LTU which is an abbreviation of - LuftTransportUnternehmen (transl "air transportation entreprise") which in my opinion sounds pretty much worse than Lufthansa (although I admit LTU is a good airline to fly with) !
Otherwise I hate dull airline names so as "My Travel" ,"Buzz" or "Go" and the like - those ones sound just so cheaply designed and plain stupid.

Northwest
Southeast
Southwest
Northeast
Western
Eastern

you'd think they could have been a bit more creative!!!!!!

Garuda means Eagle in Indonesian.

Lebanon claim the entire middle east for themselves with the name Middle East Airlines, but then abbreviate it to the anonymous MEA, which makes no sense to me. Similarly the excellent Trans Meditteranean Airlines name (Lebanese cargo airline) becomes TMA. Zzzz.

Cargo Air Lines may be a bit lame, but on the other hand it is a sister company of El Al, which apparently means In The Sky in Hebrew. Anyone know exactly?

The story is that Neil Berght was trying to think of a name to name his airline. He got so ticked off at the suggestions he was getting he said that he would name the airline after the next person who came into the door.

Which was his cousin Mark.

I did like the previous presentation of Northwest in the 70's and early 80's until they took over Republic (NorthCentral+Southern+Hughes AirWest): Northwest Orient Airlines!! While rather long it did roll of the tongue rather nicely.

What airline names would you say were creative?

This list includes 'Insert Country Here' Airlines and airlines with 'different but apparently never creative' names like Go, Buzz etc. There are very little options left.

I would say that Go is a good name, look the word up in a thesaurus. You'll get words such as 'depart', 'set off' and 'take off' - try it if you don't believe me. I think this is quite a creative name for an airline, simple, memorable, and one that I'll always like.

I too think that go is a good name for an airline, especially a low coster, and I will sorry to see those slogans go. That was a welcome departure from the norm - far from boring.
SAS-A321;
So we know what Druk Air means in Danish, but what about Muk Air? We know what that means in English (with a 'c')
And would you fly in a Veteran Airlines aircraft?

Back to boring names, Cargo Air Lines is definitely on a par with Air Freight, a small outfit witha Dak or two who I used to see at Gatwick in the seventies.

I agree on that everything that is something like:

'Air something'
'[country] [airlines|airways]'

is pretty boring.

But this business is not really known for its creativity, is it? (except when it comes to pricing schemes)
