Maastricht Aachen Airport For Sale...again

Sat Nov 16, 2002 6:30 pm

Maastricht Aachen Airport is for sale again. Schiphol Airport has showed its interest to buy a majority stake, negotiations still has to start.

Maastricht Airport has a long North-South runway suitable for ach type of aircraft. Many years MAA has lobbyed for an East-West runway but failed due to protests of a very fanatic local enviroment group. MAA is suffering heavy competition from Liege Airport (B), distance 30 km.

Last year Ryanair showed interest into MAA to establish its Dutch hub but the no-frills airline finally selected Eindhoven Airport. MAA was not prepared to do the necessary investments required by Ryanair.

Compared to Liege, MAA can not handle a fully loaded cargo 747 going long haul.

MAA has a runway of 2500m Liege has 3000m. Therefore MAA can't handle 747 flights long-haul.
Nevertheless they have a 4x weekly Cargolux 747 service but with a stop in Luxembourg.

Some years ago there were other 747 attempts with Kalitta, and Polar Air Cargo. Both airlines flew to the USA, but it was stopped. The 747 service from Polar Air moved to Ostend (with another carrier).

Wintercharters are only handfull this summer and daily scheduled passengerflights are also down to 2 destinations (Amsterdam & London Stansted), it used to be Amsterdam, London Stansted, Munich, Milan and Berlin Tempelhof.

Maybe with a new owner they can get somewhere. I have heard the present CEO used to be against the East-West runway which would allow 747 traffic at MAA (as mentioned above there is a cargo market for MAA).
