Easiest Airport For Arriving Trfc.

Mon Nov 18, 2002 9:45 am

The easiest airport for arriving traffic is DFW, first of all the airport is situated on a piece of land that is larger than Manhattan Island (I was amazed when I read that too). To make things even easier, there are absolutely no hills in the area or large buildings to complicate things. I believe that there are no runways at the airport that are less than 7,000 feet... The only thing that is difficult about DFW is that sometimes the winds can be gusty. Who do you nominate for easiest major airport to land at?

A completely non-technical opinion might nominate Denver International. Like DFW, it is also bigger than Manhattan Island (Manhattan is not actually that big), but while DFW has all its commercial runways north-south, DEN has three 12000 foot north-south runways, and two 12000 foot east-west runways. Located east of the city, DEN is clear of the mountains.

I would say some of the smaller international airports like BHM. Its about 5 miles away from the downtown buildings of Birmingham and there isn't a hill (not to mention a mountain) within 15-20 miles of the airport. Not much traffic to deal with easier. The most planes I have ever seen at BHM at one time was 6.

im with jcs17, dfw is pretty clear of, well, anything. no mountains, nothing is really there, besides a big mall.

Manhattan is 23 square miles. Should you do the math, you'll find that it's not entirely difficult to get a modern airport to that size.

I nominate MCI. It's 18 miles from the city center. It has two N/S runways, one 10600 feet long, the other 9600 feet long, and an E/W runway 10600 feet long. One N/S and one E/W runway, both over 10000 ft, are in planning stages, and there are only an average of 700 operations (350 take offs or landings each) each day.

Also, for passenger egress, it's a simple matter of walking off the jetway, thirty feet and out the security door. From there, you're never more than 300 feet from a ticket counter and a baggage claim, or you're just 35 feet from curbside. Also, there are easy-access tunnels under the street to the parking garages.
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it in summer school.

JAX is really easy- only Class C airspace and not very busy comparitively, even though it does get quite a few 767 arrivals and such throughout the day.
