What Airlines Will Stop Int. First Class?

Tue Nov 19, 2002 12:18 am

Are there any airlines that are considering ending International First Class ?
In the US NW, Co and Delta have done so, in Europe SAS and KLM deleted First Class.

Many Asian carriers are reshuffling three class aircraft into 2 class cabins.
Those carriers seem to be the more succesfull ones ..

Does it have to do with pride and influencial politicians / CEO's protecting "their" seats ??

SriLankan Airlines only operates Y and J Class ...

Malaysia Airlines had plans to take out the F class on several longhaul flights but the latest is, that they still operate 3 classes

Whats about Qantas, are all Europe flights only with two class config?

LH will take out First on transatlantic flights when the new cabin design is introduced, that was announced some months ago.

Andreas:

Do you have a link to press release on this? I hope it doesn't happen for a while, as I have forked over UA miles for two LH F tickets for next summer. LH has perhaps the best F product in the industry, and I would hate to see it vanish before my travels.

well, LH will introduce a new cabin design i believe late next year and they have been repeatedly thinking about getting rid of First Class on some selected longhaul routes, but afaik, there has not been an official statement that they will get rid of the First Class on all transatlantics. i once heard about MIA and YVR, though...

i highly doubt that´s gonna be the case. not that i would be surprised, but i don´t think that´s a step LH is going to take. and if they have already decided to do so, there should be tons of press releases or might have overlooked something.
besides, there hasn´t been any official word to the employees, yet.

cheers

Zrs70: Where did you get this info from? "LH has perhaps the best F product in the industry, and I would hate to see it vanish before my travels."
The LH F Class is below average! Nowadays it is rather a disappointment if you compare it with some other airlines.

Tadex:

I get the info from experience. LH's F product, from its seat to its dining to its service is above and beyond the majority of that which other carriers offer. And I think that as a package, LH often goes beyond the likes of SQ and CX.

You say it is below average. To what are you comparing?

I compare to the following from intercontinental F (or C) flights over the past two years:

SQ
SR
UA
NZ
BA
RG
VS (C)
US (C)
DL (C)
BD (C)
OS (C)

The only product that I think rivals LH F is BD in C.

I guess you have different expectations. I just disagree or have a different opinion, that´s it.

Qantas are converting some of their 747-400s to two class configuration, this is being talked about here: http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/967074/

There is a distinct possibility that Air New Zealand will be replacing its long haul First and Business class cabins with an upgraded Business Class, on par with that of SQ, CX, etc.

LH: I seem to remember that they said it on an analyst meeting, but I'm not sure if they talk about all transatlantic flights or just some routes. But I think it's rather plausible actually.

Tadex: You did not answer the question of zrs70. What exactly are your expectations of a First Class Seat? Space, catering, entertainment? Well then I'd be really interested why you call LH inferior.
Have you actually flown LH First, like zrs70 and, incidentally, myself?
What was it you didn't like?

Andreas, most First Class seats are single seats with a lot of privacy, serious big tables, secretary/ friend seats, face to face dinner options, video on demand and exoctic food and crew members....

I'm not sure LH fills this in the best.

I remember from international magazine polls LH is generally not on top.
Perhaps it is in the German market.

US just released their first class product on their A330s. As far as I know, they aren't planning to take it out.

Yeah in fact the A330 is the first time US has ever had a longhaul first class, and, honestly, the seats are awesome.

I flew on an A330 from PHL-CDG in Envoy (which is a GREAT business cabin I might add) and got to sit in one of the F class seats about 10 minutes pre-flight. Pretty nice...

The only time I've flown in 3-class F on UA was an old 762 from IAD-SFO. It was fine, layed flat and all, but the controls were difficult and it wasn't that great. The flight was also at 0900 and it was snowing, so I left the house way too early... subsequently, I slept the whole way anyway so it couldn't have been too bad.  Smile

AA is to reconfigure all its 767-300 to two class configuration, 30 J and 180 Y.
It looks like only the UK will retain F class on the 777-200. They are talking about streamlining the configuration of the 777 fleet, losing the transatlantic/pacific differences in the process.
I just hope that the flagship suite is kept as it really is an incredible travel experience, especially as a couple. The face to face first class diner is so romantic!

Keesje: Usually I Fly Business, But On...

longhaul I sometimes have the pleasure to be on First. I don't see what LH does not have, seating is very good, better than anything I know, meal options are good and flexible, though certainly not better than others, dito entertainment and privacy.
All discussions about who's best are totally useless, because people tend to prefer the carrier they use most or their favorite because of the nice livery of because daddy says so....
But I do not see exactly why LH should be inferior..it is not and I know SQ and CX First, that are usually topranking in all those surveys...and yes, I do think, somebody here on this thread is talking about something he does not know..

Well, best regards and I try to find out where I got the info about LH abolishing First on Transatlantic.

HI to all,

there is no intention that LH is about to take out it's F/CL. They advised that the might consider this only on some selected routes, that's it.

Pakistan International Airlines used to operate in a 3 class configuration--but now they only operate in a 2 class set up. Maybe this is one of the many reasons that helped them cut costs and help in their recent purchase of 8 brand new 777's.

Actually, rumor has it that US will be removing the F cabin from the A330s. In fact, it is not psosible to buy a ticket into the spring on an A330 in F. After 9/11, the main difference between First and Envoy was the seat, which did not really justify such a huge difference in price for most passengers.
