Aeroflot Finally Signs For 18 A319/A320s

Tue Nov 19, 2002 3:16 am

It has now been announced that Aeroflot has signed on the dotted line for 18 A320 family aircraft, made up of A319s and A320s. The first A319 will be delivered in autumn of 2003. The value of the aircraft order is up to US$600 million

Of the total 18 aircraft, 8 are covered by an agreement from 18 November, and the other 10 coming from GECAS.

Also signed was a protocol on the joint venture Airbus-Kaskol Engineering Centre in Moscow. The centre, the first direct investment in Russia by Airbus, is expected to open in December. (FYI....Kaskol is a group of companies which includes Volga-Dnepr Cargo Airlines and Sokol Aircraft Manufacturing in Nizhniy Novgorod...their website is http://www.kaskol.ru)

Wonder what the livery will be? A310/767-like? or 737/777?

Great news for Aeroflot, but I'm sure this drives a significant number of nails in the proverbial coffin of the Russian aviation industry. Too bad Tupolev and Ilyushin cannot produce the aircraft needed by the airlines of the former Soviet Union.  Sad

IL96M,

Guess the problem is not that Tupolev or Ilyushin cannot produce good planes, IMHO and from many aspects I think that both the Tu-334 and the Tu-204 are very nice planes. The main problem is that both manufactures lack from financial resources to keep production lines open and due many other factors (political and economical) the international community is rather skeptical about buying planes from Russia.

It??s a circle, foreign airlines don??t buy Russian planes because they are not sure about deliveries and doing this just worsen the internal situation of Tupolev, Antonov, Ilyushin, etc.

A better financing policy (again, related to political and economical issues) would help a lot as well.

Does that mean the 734's are on the way out?

Great news for Airbus, but sad news for Tu and IL.

I'm still waiting to see how things will move on for the russians builders... Those Tu-204/214/234/334 and IL-96-300/400 desserve more than what they had up to now...

LY744,

Yeah they're close to the exit door... The leasing contracts won't be renewed.

Yeah, I'm aware that Russian/Ukrainian aircraft manufacturers are producing world-class products. The issue is, of course, financing production. That is what seems to be sounding the death knell for such great aircraft at TU-204, TU-334, IL-96-300 and IL-96-400. Maybe government subsidies are in order. But certainly not cost-prohibitive tariffs against foreign aircraft Russian airlines need to order to continue operations. Does anyone know the details of the deal Aeroflot has made with Airbus? Is the joint venture to service the new A320 family aircraft at SVO part of the bargain?

Their 737-400s (at least one of them, VP-BAN) have 2-2 configuration in Business. It's interesting to know if those new A319/20 will have the same configuration, or "more traditional" 2-3 or even quite common 3-3 with just increased legroom. 2-2 was VERY comfortable...

RIX, just thought I would mention this. Asian carriers which have always known to be better in various aspects have their B737's Business/First classes configured 2-2 and it is comfortable although with only slightly increased legroom. From my experience they are 2-2 on TG, MH and China Southern (although CZ is nowhere near the 'good' Asian airline).

It is only in Europe that Business class is the same as Economy only with better legroom, if any at all..

I am pretty sure that Aeroflot is turning in the 777's for a lot more 767's.

I know that Aeroflot was previously given substantial financial incentives to buy or lease western aircraft, but isn't Aeroflot now constrained over the number of western aircraft it can have in its fleet? I am pretty sure that I read somewhere that it could buy no more than a certain percentage of its total fleet from western manufacturers in order to create demand for domestically produced planes such as the TU-204 and IL-96. But right now, I cannot find any reference to this quota. Does anybody have any more firm information?

Anyway, of interest, its current fleet is slightly more than 100 planes and I am looking at a document on Aerolflot (from July 2002) which says they want to standardise their "western" fleet on just two types - 18 A320s (this thread!) and 9 long-haul 763s. It only has 6 IL-96-300s and is currently dumping the IL-62s and IL-86s. See below link...

There's Another Prob With Russian Aircraft...

Tue Nov 19, 2002 7:04 pm

...and that is the not-so-hot reputation of Ilyushin and Tupolev among travellers from Europe and North America. I'm not talking about experts such as the guys in the aviation industry (and on this Forum, not to be forgotten *ggg*), but instead your average John Doe flying, who is buying most of the tickets and therefore the one to decide which aircraft he is ready to fly and which ones not. The first group consists mainly of A and B and a few companies building smaller shorthaul aircraft. The second group consists of all other companies, such as the Russians and whoever else.
Now don't flame me for saying that, it's just a fact and carriers have to live with it. Surely a carrier like LH could get a megadeal on Russian aircraft and probably they could even solve probs concerning maintenance, spare parts etc., but LH would nevertheless suffer from a harsh decline in passenger numbers.

And as Aeroflot is definitely trying to get people from Europe and maybe even Americans to fill their aircraft, they have to get Western aircraft. It's as simple as that!

This is great news! But I hope they are in the same colors as the A310.
Or even better, the Tu154 colors!
