Top Page Graphic On A.net, Re: 747 Pix

Silly question really, with regards to the default PanAm 747 pix 'paneldel1-1. GIF’ at the top of the page, do you think that by the time the A380 enters service; it should be replaced by an A380's bug-eyed forward view or just leave it alone?  Smile

The pic at the top of the page is actully a Northwest 747-400 in its old paint scheme. Pan Am never owned 744s.

Oooh Kay, I didn't see the winglets.  Embarrassment

Maybe PanAm was already dying when the 744 came along, yes?

Anyways, should it be changed to an A380 to signify 'the change of the guard' or something like it?

Agree with CMK10, its a NWA 744.

And no. The 747 was revolutionary, it forever changed air travel. The a380, which will be a great plane (yes, I do think this despite my user name), is just evolutionary. There is not much (well, there is the laser welding, which will be new to aviation, but is nothing new to industry) that is new on this bird. It is just existing technology writ large.

But it will still be cool to see the big a380 roll off the runways when it enters service, though  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Didn't NW change to their newer paint scheme BEFORE they got their 747-400s? This looks like the 1970s-early-1980s scheme and the 744s came afterwards. Evicently I'm wrong based on the winglets that define this as a 747-400, but I could have sworn the type entered service with NW in the newer schemes not what they have now, but newer than what's shown here).

Despite thinking that the A380 will mark yet another great step in aviation, I still think that the 747 on top should stay there. It was, after all, the first major step. Either that, or Concorde! I mean, it was designed just when people were starting to fly across the Atlantic non-stop - quite a vision to have, eh?

ChrisNH,
Early deliveries of both the B747-400 and A320 to Northwest featured the silver-based scheme.

As for the B747 being more revolutionary than the A380, well I'm not sure about that. The B747 was Boeing extending the family, like Lockheed did with the TriStar and McDonell Douglas did with the DC-10.

If you want revolutionary (jets) then your only real choices are the DH Comet, the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8. The Comet was first, and the 707 and DC-8 were commercially successful at introducing the modern concept of air travel. The 747 just took it to a larger market...
