  • Boeing 777 (big!, long)
  • Iliyshin IL-96 (tall tail and wingletz!)
  • Airbus A330 (same elegance of A340, but big two engines)
  • Iliyshin IL-76 (heavy one, glass nose, T-tail)

1) Concorde - by a mile
2) Vickers VC-10 - only a mile behind Concorde
3) DH Comet - especially compared to the props of the day
4) Bristol Britannia - best looking turboprop and pretty big
5) DH Dragon Rapid (even before my time)

Here's my top five:

Constellation - Especially the 1049G with tip tanks.

VC10 - Who says the British design ugly airplanes! Even in RAF grey or tan they still look sleek.

707 - Looks like its always in motion.

A340 - OK, I'll swallow my American pride a bit here and admit its the best looking airliner currently being produced. Seeing one off in the distance on approach reminds me of the 707.

777-200 - If it had winglets, I'd pick it over the A340 for best looking current a/c. The -300 looks good, but a bit awkward with all that extra length.

Who, me? I see what you mean but I assure you it was an accident! I could have included the 747-400 but I just feel, for the reasons I added, that those were the sleekest and curviest airliners I've known, especially in their day.

5. DC-10-30

1. Caravelle
2. Vickers Viscount-good proportions for the 4 Dart engines
3. Lockheed Constellation 1049 with wing tip tanks
4. Stretch DC-8's --they looked better long!
5. My god-Convair 440/580--they still look modern 40 years later!!

Special Mention:

Convair 880/990--nice line with the slim fuselage-but needed a bit more character
The Original Coronado: First CV jet flights RG CV 990 July 1965; DL CV 880 July 1965; Spantax CV990 Feb 1973

B737-200 (GREEEAT!)
A320
B727
A340 (only the -200 version and only the first few built as their nosegear is shorter than the ones followed - gives them a GREAT look!)

I like the MD90; it looks like an oversized bizjet.
A330, 747, SR-71, & Concorde... from the inside out the 777 wins hands down with it’s sleek smoothly sculpted interiors and clever packaging of the overhead bins. I would also vote for the 777's exterior shape but unfortunately you have be standing very close to appreciate it's subtle aerodynamic beauty. It’s just not apparent from a distance.

Just having a very random look through the answers given so far and it looks as if the A340 scores very highly again, so I'm not going to dissent!

1) A340
2) B747
3) A330-200
4) A321

And just another two, for honourable mention, the 777 and the MD11.

Whats Wrong With You All?

Thu Nov 04, 1999 3:41 pm

I cannot belive that only one of you voted for the best looking aircraft still in service. The one that looks like its cruising while parked. The one just says "LET ME FLY" The One, The Incomparable, THE 757!

Also, no one mentioned the Queen of the pre-war years. The only type that you had to fly on to see and be seen. The Pan Am Clippers (Boeings, I think, but I'm lost in the moment)

And for sheer power, get in your face saucy attitude, I have to vote for the B-36 Peacemaker. It just screams 'I dare you!'

And for grace and stylish elegance post WW2, the SUPER CONNIE--must be a landslide by now.

Last, but certainly not least, the one aircraft which to me simply exudes design genius, the Rutan Proteus. Maybe not everyday, but it is unique AND lovely to look at.

I have to say that my all-time favourite is the B727-200 (hence the user name).

Also like the newish Canadair CRJ-200 - very sleek aircraft to watch in action.

For big jets, I like the A340 for all the reasons stated above.

And for the nostalgia buffs, how can anyone go past the Constellation. Even now a very impressive aircraft to watch in low level manoeuvres (if your lucky enough to witness one).

What a response!
I am going to have to add these up but its clear that the leader of the modern jets is the A340 and the classics is the constellation
Seems about right...
I( am suprised how much the more modern jets are admired. To my eyes many are just bland...there is something about the props..
So no votes except from me, for the delightful Heron
And what about the Brittania? No? well maybe not...
Keep them coming and good to see the TU154 get some votes...
Weel have an add up this weekend...
