This is good news. I hope the service lasts. It's interesting how NW chooses the flights that it will issue press releases for. They issued releases for the the MSP flights (ORF, etc.) but I didn't see a single mention of the new Memphis-Grand Cayman service. The only way I found out about that one was from a banner placed in the Memphis airport by the Grand Cayman tourist agency.

From the press release:

"Mexico City will become the eighth international nonstop destination for Northwest out of Memphis. Other year-round destinations include Amsterdam, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Jamaica, and San Jose, Costa Rica. Northwest also offers seasonal service to Cancun, Mexico, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Vancouver, British Columbia."

San Jose, Costa Rica? I wasn't was aware that NW even flew there. A Memphis to SJO flight is not listed in their current timetable. In fact, the only SJO flights listed in the timetable are operated by Continental. I noticed that San Juan is missing from the list above, which is service that has existed for several years. I wonder if someone misplace SJU with SJO.

I think the SJO is a type-o. NW was awarded MSP-SJO but never started the service. They currently serve MSP-Liberia, Costa Rica seasonally. The MEM-GCM service was announced during the summer because it started on 10-27. They usually announce new service about 3-4 months before it actually begins.

Perhaps a future codeshare with AM should "WingsTeam" come into fruition?  Big grin

I hope the MEX service works. NW had a flight to MTY (northern Mexico) from MEM a while ago, but it didn't last long. However, NWs flights to DTW have been running for a number of years now, and its seems they have been doing well.

The MTY service was operated by Pinnacle CRJs. Many issues went into that service reduction.

Azjubilee,

Could you ellaborate? I would really like to know what went wrong with the MTY service. MTY is the industrial capital of Mexico, with probably the highest standard of living for a big Mexican city. I thought a service to MEM with NWs connection possibilities would work, but it obviously didn't for some reason.

Actually, I'm fairly certain the MEM-GCM service (though I think it originally went via TPA) dates way, way back to Southern Airways.

This is the first nonstop service from MEM to GCM. I agree that service via TPA has existed for many years, but the first international scheduled nonstop service from Memphis didn't occur until Northwest came into town after the RC merger. I believe Northwest's nonstops to MBJ, PVR and CUN were the first scheduled international destinations from MEM. Grand Cayman is a huge destination for well-to-do Memphians, though (Tom Cruise and Gene Hackman even flew this route in the movie "The Firm"), so they should be able to pick up some O&D traffic in addition to connecting passengers.

Excellent news from NorthWest... Since they discontinued the second MEX-DTW, their schedules were awful, but now I can start flying with them once more... Last december I took the MEX-DTW flight and it was full on both legs MEX-DTW and DTW-MEX, lots of business people from auto makers and mexicans that live in the Detroit area.

Hope this flight lasts... Way to go NorthWest!!!

First, it's Northwest, not NorthWest.

Second - the MEM-MTY service was dropped a few years ago primarily because a major contract that filled the seats was lost for whatever reason. That would be like Eagle pulling out of LGA-XNA if they lost the Walmart contract.

Northwest never flew TPA-GCM. They did fly TPA-MBJ and TPA-CUN. The GCM service was out of MIA which was inherited from Republic which got it thru Southern.

Sorry, Azjubilee... I will try not to write NorthWest with the capital "W" again, but in my company we used to avoid the Continental Airlines flights operated by North-Worst for many reasons and we always used the capital "W" to make it look Worst...

Very interesting about the GCM service, Bobnwa. I had assumed it went via TPA. I have some some older NW schedules I just checked. GCM wasn't even listed in the timetable for Sept. 2001. For February 2002 GCM was served out of both DTW and MSP, although the MSP flight was Saturday-only. For May 2002 it was "AIR" service via Newark.

I'll dig out some much older Northwest and Republic timetables tonight.

Hi!

Really nice move indeed!
But hope it lasts... I don't want to see the same thing it happened to TWA on its Mexico City - New Orleans flight where they had to cut it back...

Is there a large population of Mexicans in the area? Or this kind of flights works very well for connections? Charlotte, Atlanta, Dallas, Jacksonville are kind of close to Memphis...

Last June I flew NW to Pittsburgh and I think the 70% of the people travelling in my flight were making a connection in Detroit to somewhere else... Hope this new Memphis service turns the same as I really like Northwest.

Rojo... Nice to see you! Do you (or anybody else) know why NW stopped their second flight to Detroit from Mexico City? Did they always use their 320?

Fly the Red Tails... Fly Northwest
