Air Lanka/Sri Lankan

A recent article in Airways magazine about Sri Lankan Airways shows they have four L1011s still in their fleet. Does anyone know if they still have Air Lanka titles and colors or will they not be repainted as Sri Lankan plans to retire them in 2000. Chris

No, they will not be painting the L1011's in the new colours. As a matter of fact the Tristars will be phased out end of this year.

It is correct. Four Air Lanka Tristars (4R-ULA, ULB, ULC and ULE) will not be painted in new SriLankan livery. Last of the Tristars will go out of service in April 2000 when the new A330-200s have repleced them all. Till then SriLankan will progressively phase out the TriStars as the new A330s roll out from Toulouse.

All new A330s will bear SriLankan livery and the A340 SriLankan dry leased July 1999. The remaining 3 A340s and 2 A320s will need a new paint job and will be done in near future

I am not sure if the A320s will get the new colours, because aren't they planning to sell them off too? Apparently the A330s are replacements for the TriStars AND A320s.

Gardermoen, where did you hear that AirLanka is going to sell the A320? I don't think they would; because they have short thin regional routes such as South Indian cities to operate with A320. Also there are some middle east destinations which are ideal for A320 in terms of range and payload; such as Doha and Karachi. I don't think they would get rid of the A320 and I have not heard or seen any indication so far.

I have read this many times. Most recently about a week ago in some article I think in the Daily News of Sri Lanka. And also more than a year ago whenthe A330 order was first put through. I remember the discussion about how the A330 would not be suitable for some airports in South India(Trichy, Trivandrum etc). I do agree with you that the A320 is ideal for its regional routes, esp to South India and some Gulf routes. This equipment would be the right sort to start the long-awaited Dhaka service. The A330 is far too large for frequent services to neighbouring destinations and for opening up new regional routes.

That new 'color-scheme' is a huge step backwards for Air Lanka. Which well-paid executive came up with that corporate identity?

F-WWKH I could not agree with you more. When I first saw it I thought they could have done better. I would have kept the old peakok in red and white only in the tail (like Qantas) with pure white body and then put a nice big green/blue peacock feather between the two front Doors and Big Letters "AirLanka" just behind that (bit similar to Air NZ). That would be much nicer and I know most of the staff were not happy with the new look. They called it the strangled peacock.

However I must admit after the initial reaction I am somewhat getting used to it.

As for Gardermoen, I agree it is best to keep the A320s to open up new routes like Dhaka, Kathmandu and Calcutta.

Some execs at Emirates came up with the logo. Cant you see traces of Emirates in the new logo? I have heard about a huge fuss in Sri Lanka over the logo. Apparently when the Sri Lankan govt sold the share off to Emirates, the condition was that the name "Air Lanka" was to be retained, but look what they did! .I must say the A330s do look better than what I initially expected.
