Bwia To Add HVN, SDQ And SJO

Tue Nov 26, 2002 9:04 am

BWIA is to start flying between HAV and POS from January 2003, to SDQ and SJO from March 2003. Its good to see BWIA expanding to other Latin countries in Central America and The Caribbean, I do wonder if these flights will work out though- and wont the 737-800 be too big for these routes?

Sorry about posting the 3 letter ICAO code wrong - its HAV instead of HVN.
And even the MD-80 I would consider is also too big for these routes.

It would be nice to see a BWee 738 in HVN, it would certainly beat the 2-3 Dash 8s to PHL each day...

As for the new service, my guess is it will depend on the frequency. If it is daily 738, it might be a little too much, but if it is 1-2x weekly 738, then it might work out, especially if they can time it with connecting traffic.

I'll correct the title of the post again to avoid further confusion- The title was supposed to be Havana (HAV), Cuba not New Haven (HVN).

If the flights are routed HAV-SDQ-POS and they have complete traffic rights between all points, then it may be a profitable venture. Otherwise I do not think so. SJO...well let's be hopeful... Anyway Good Luck to BWIA!

I doubt they would use the MD83 because that is due to phase out by March 2003 and the Dash-8....well they were suppose to be gone by now.
While we're on the BW route expansion, a couple months back, they were talking about expanding in South America..ie..Pariabo,etc..

Interesting news - they seem to have finally realized that the airline needs to serve some new markets to generate more revenue. After all fighting everybody else over POS traffic is not going to keep the airline alive.

HAV should be very interesting as Cubana served POS from there several years ago.

I can see BGI as an intermediate stop to both HAV and SDQ (seperatly),
rather than POS-SDQ-HAV.

Just got some updates on the BWIA fleet:
1)DHC-3-300, 9Y-WIN is now operating with Bahamassair which just leaves 9Y-WIP and 9Y-WIL which is due to phase out March 2003. So far, there is no pilots sent home yet.
2) BWIA MD83 9Y-THW was returned too its lessor late October which leaves 9Y-THQ and 9Y-THX.
3) The second A340-300 will be Registered 9Y-TJL.
Two pilots have already been chosen to go to Seattle to get the new B738 so I guess we will be seeing it soon. There is no exact date yet.
