DL/Comair New Service: CVG-SCE

Tue Nov 26, 2002 9:11 am

Word around the airport from the manager here is that DL Connection operated by Comair will start operations here during the first part of 2003. They will fly CVG-SCE using CRJ's, most likely 3x daily. These will be the first scheduled RJ flights into State College and the first new carrier and city pair since Mesaba started operations to DTW here in 1993.

This will certainly be interesting as to how this plays out to how the other carriers will respond. Our other service is all on smaller turboprop aircraft such as the 34 pax Saab's operated by Mesaba (NW Airlink), the 37 pax Dash-8's operated by Alleghany (USAirways Express) and the 29 pax Jetstream 41's by ACA (United Express). Now we'll get 50 pax CRJ's and time will tell if other carriers will respond. Our loads don't justify a CRJ, with the exception of a handful of days during the year around breaks, holidays, and home football weekends. They've sent us a CRJ of a few occasions as a sub for a Junkstream. The other airline's loads generally don't justify the use of a larger aircraft except during those few peak periods. We shall see how all the competion plays out, if anything attempting to put another nail on the USAirways coffin. They will attempt to steal traffic from the PIT-SCE flights on and also from NW/XJ on DTW-SCE. In comparison, DTW blows both CVG & PIT out of the water in terms of desination. I doubt it will really impact our IAD-SCE flight too much, wrong direction.

Other interesting things around here; Wed is gonna be busy, busy, busy. We're gonna be getting either a CRJ or wingtip J41's from IAD. XJ is flying wingtip Saab's to DTW, and Alleghany has added extra departures to PIT. And we've got a winter storm coming Tue night/Wed......this could be interesting. Also, this past Friday & Saturday we had an AA MD-80 in here as a charter for the Michigan State football team......too bad they got trashed 61-7.....haha......Larry Johnson for Heisman...

SCE is no longer airport code. It's UNV now. I just found out a few months ago. I had topic posted a few months ago about the new airport code has been changed from SCE to UNV now.

Umm, I was the one that told you that. Yes, officially it is UNV. I work there. The airlines still use SCE and for the practicality of it, the flying public knows it as SCE.

Why should airlines use SCE code for airport code UNV? Pilots might confused for guide flight plan etc... Why did they keep this SCE for? It doesn't make any sense.  Confused How would you like to keep IDL (not sure code was) {Idlewild Airport} as of JFK airport? Can you guys explain why airport code use UNV and airline code for SCE? The problem is I can't access SCE for flight tracker flytecomm.com and it works UNV.

Thanks,

Marquette Airport closed and the old KI Sawyer AFB was its replacement. The airlines still use MQT. The official code is now, SAW.

This is good news. They are still expanding. KTVC wont be to far away either.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DL announce SCE/UNV (or whatever you guys want to call it). It's consistent with DL's recent announcement of service to ERI, BGM and MLI.

SCE/UNV meets two of DL's goals. First, attack US with every RJ possible. DL wants US to go away and the easiest way to do that is attack all the high-yield, small markets where US has been traditionally dominant. Second, DL wants to improve the performance of the CVG hub by pushing more traffic through it. One way to do this is add lots of new spoke cities.

If SCE/UNV cannot fill a 50 seat CRJ, DL might instead send a 32 seat FRJ from ACA. ACA now has a large operation in CVG.

Yep, thats very true. They just started ops on CVG-ERI recently. ERI used to be a stronghold of US, heck it was mainline with F-100's and 737's for the short hop down I-79 into PIT. Now its a prop and RJ route. DL/Comair has come in to steal that market away from US, and NW has come with with CRJ's to further erode at the US market share. US's ops at PIT are evaporating overnight, the mainline operations are a fraction of what they used to be. That hurts all the spokes from PIT with reduced passenger traffic and connections.

State College/University Park is a stronghold for US. They have a majority of the flights here. No doubt, this is a move against them. Basically DL's CVG hub is attempting to steal from a lot of US's PIT traffic.

I work for ACA here, and from what I was told it was Comair, and thats what I naturally assumed anyways. If it were going to be ACA, we would have likely heard something from the company. We operate as United Express here, so I don't know how that would work for us to operate under 2 different banners. I'll keep ya posted with what I hear. I remember a few months ago I did see a Comair CRJ out in front of the GA terminal, but I assumed it was a sports charter or something.
