Delta Connection Service Expansion

Wed Nov 27, 2002 11:39 am

This is a query of which I have only sketchy knowledge, at best. I'm hoping to find some information, even if it is only to find out that I'm out to lunch.

Delta Connection seems to be expanding wildly, and in some cases replacing mainline services. This would obviously seem to affect Delta mainline pilots and other crew in obvious ways. However, I don't seem to hear much (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist) opposition or controversy about this transition. Do Delta Connection and Delta operate as one entity and therefore it's not an issue? Are there regulations in place that protect Delta employees, or can Delta as a company do whatever it deems fit for the needs of different markets?

This is a bit of a curiosity to me because if memory serves me correct, some airlines have had some dissension within their ranks when it comes to size of aircraft or routes that are allowed by a regional carrier.

I guess this query isn't even airline specific. Regional carriers seem to be taking over mainline services on many US carriers.

There are provisions in the pilot contract which is supposed to protect mainline pilots; CRJs are very profitable- there would be many more of them flying mainline routes if not for these specific contract provisions.

I too saw that in the past few weeks Delta Connection has been expanding quite rapidly. My only explanation could be that comair is expanding to cities now, so that it can utilize its planes well after it pulls out of the MCO hub when Chattanuga takes over.

Chattanuga, eh? You might want to check that.

My understanding is that the DL pilots contract has a very liberal scope clause in it... something like 49% of the flying or something. Someone in the know confirm/deny/correct?

Flashmeister is right, the DL scope clause is very liberal which is allowing for much of this expansion. The only other major to have as liberal of a scope clause right now is CO....although when/if US gets out of BK, their scope clause will be quite liberal as well.

I don't think the DL pilots particularly like what DL connection is doing, but DL has no choice. Many of the old mainline routes just aren't profitable anymore and to give DL some credit, they are also opening up new routes with RJ's that couldn't be flown by mainline...like CVG-ERI, CVG-BGM, BOS-YHZ, DFW-MAF,etc.

So Comair is now flying out of SkyWest territory at SLC. I also heard that SkyWest has been entering Comair territory, most noticable at CVG [...]. Does anyone have any details on routes and number of planes involved?

i dont have any specifics, but what they are simply doing is spreading the connection carriers to a multiple of hubs, so there is more than one connection carrier at each hub. This is if Comair had another strike, ACA can step in and try to pick up some slack at CVG while Comair is on strike

Actually, I believe he means Chautauqua which is taking over most of the MCO operations from Comair.
