TAM Brasil: 9 A330s, But Only 5 Needed?

Thu Nov 28, 2002 1:21 am

I checked TAM's winter schedule today and found out that they only offer daily A330 flights to Miami, Paris and Buenos Aires (double daily). To operate these routes they would only need five aircraft, however they have nine of them. Any ideas if they are used on domestic services frequently? If not, then operating nine of them doesn't seem to be economic.

Yes, the two RR powered aircraft returned to Gulf Air which now uses them on their new daily rotations to Paris and Frankfurt.

I don't know how this will affect your calculations, but the flights to MIA are also daily, and the 332s are also used on daily flights from GRU to SSA, REC/FOR and, if I am not wrong, on peak hours between GRU and BSB.

There's a misunderstanding. When I referred to daily Paris and Frankfurt flights in my last post, I talked about Gulf Air.

Did TAM ever fly to London or have plans to do so?

Hi Dondoer10,

TAM never flew to London and at least as far as I know it never planned to do so. Varig currently flies GIG-GRU-LHR daily, continuing to CPH three times a week. Of course BA flies to Brazil as well. Daily LHR-GRU-GIG but this is to be changed to 4 weekly LHR-GRU-GIG and 3 weekly LHR-GRU-EZE.

You see, let me take a moment here to comment on something. Unlike carriers from all over the world LHR is not the main longhaul destination for Latin American carries, that "honour" goes to MIA. But even if we think about European operations alone, there are many airports airlines here would go first, before landing at London.

For most Latin airlines the main European target is, of course Madrid, (I don't think I'd have to explain why) and here in Brazil many destinations have more traffic than LON. I can think, in order of importance, of CDG, LIS, FRA, and MAD as having more traffic than London.

Hope it helps!

The daylight MIA-GRU service should return this April, hopefully.
