DOT Gives DL Slots To Launch DCA-SLC

Thu Nov 28, 2002 5:35 am

The DOT awarded DL two beyond perimeter slots to operate DCA-SLC. These were previously held by National which is no longer operating.

I walked into work today to find this pleasant surprise. Should be a very successful route.

"Should be a very successful route!"

Why is that?

Correct me if I am wrong but Delta currently operates only one non-stop between these markets (to IAD). Is there really that much traffic on a day-to-day basis to sustain two non-stops?

Is there additional connecting traffic from points further west, north or south that Delta thinks it will capture?

I can see nothing else behind this decision but politics. The mountainwest states voted for Bush and here is how they get paid back. Meanwhile, the rest of us in California, Los Angeles in particular, a market which invariably can support dozens of non-stops to IAD are still stuck with one-stop service.

That is OK... I actually found a silver-lining in this decision. If the DOT is playing politics with its decisions, this can only mean that there are more paybacks in store for those who got Bush elected. Of course, they have to appear palatable like the decision to give Delta perimeter exemption to fly to SLC. What do you say about giving AA and BA the right to codeshare under the existing terms of Bermuda II? After all, United and BMI are doing it. And so are Continental and Virgin Atlantic. If that is the way the Bush Administration wants to think, I like it.

Ladevale, there are actually two daily SLC-IAD nonstops, one 757, and one 737-8. Both run consistenly full, and as with all SLC-East Coast flights, Delta carries an enormous amount of connection traffic from the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast regions. I'm certain Delta won't find it difficult to run the flights full and profitable.

I imagine the new flight will replace the late morning SLC-IAD flight.

As for your argument about the decision being political, it's clear that 9 out of every 10 DOT decisions are almost purely political. Somebody with your level of intelligence and knowledge should know that the AA-BA issue is that 1 out of 10. The stakes are simply too high.

Why do we have this "DCA perimeter"?

Um, it does... ever heard of these little airlines called American, United, Southwest, and JetBlue?? They kinda/sorta fill the L.A. - D.C. market up  Big grin

SLC may be small compared to LA but that doesn't mean that it can't support service to DCA. In fact, I once saw O/D statistics, either here or elsewhere, that were interesting to say the least. If I can find them, I'll share them. Anyway, LA and SF had the highest O/D numbers of the beyond perimeter cities. However, SLC actually had higher O/D numbers than many cities that were awarded beyond perimeter rights. This includes LAS, PHX and even SEA. If AS is able to run profitable flights SEA-DCA with lower O/D than SLC-DCA I don't see why this shouldn't be a successful flight.
