ATA - DOT Reporting

Thu Nov 28, 2002 11:21 am

We received word from our management team Monday that the DOT has informed ATA (TZ) that it will be a DOT major reporting carrier, and is thus required to maintain public records on on-time departures/arrivals, baggage handling and customer complaints.

It's exciting to know that we're now being watched; here's hoping we can compete.

Of interest to anyone, in order to be a DOT reporting carrier, you must surpass $1B in revenue and carry at least 1% of the domestic passenger load.

Have a good Thanksgiving, if you're state-side.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Uh ohh, this is bad for ATA. I know the on time percentage is one of the worst, just by stories I hear and experiences. I cant wait to see this official info.

Well, don't give us a chance or anything...

As for our on-time performance, we've been performing in the top-half of US major carriers. We've tracked this as a company privately to ensure we could compete when the time came.

ATA had a dismal record for delays years ago when the fleet consisted of aging 727s and L10s... ATA now has 29 of 30 738s delivered and will take delivery of more 753s soon. TZ has one of the most modern fleets in the industry!

Regardless of cynicism, it's an exciting opportunity and challenge for the employees of ATA.

The management team at C8 lately has been scolding stations for sending planes out of the gate a few minutes early. I know here in Dayton we had 9 early departures in the past few weeks. Our on-time performance is fairly decent, as my fellow C8 employees on this board can attest to. Ramp congestion and short staffing at Chicago-Midway seem to be the largest problems ATA and C8 encounter. So give us a chance, I think we'll surprise some people with our performance numbers.

On-time wise, we'll be just fine. Our baggage rates aren't all that bad. What kills us is customer complaints. I'm not sure if its a statistical anomaly because of our "small major" size or if our customers are just plain unhappy, but the complaint rate will be our true challenge.

I'm glad to hear the "no early departures" message is getting out to the stations. It'll really help MDW. On the mainline side, they have aircraft sitting on the ground for ~20 mins. waiting for gates. When I was at the South ramp last week, they had 8 rampers to work our 11 Saab spots. I hate freezing out there in the wind waiting those couple minutes, but it really is important. That, combined with the crews flying long-range cruise speeds, helps keep the operation right on time...nice and predictable for MDW.

On the CS side, ACFS (or some such acronym) will be coming as a Sabre "enhancement" on Dec. 8. It makes it harder to not charge the add collect and change fee. It also changes all your pricing/ticketing/storing entries and voids the rule they taught you in training ("what it takes to price, it takes to store...") Also, look for a new read and initial on Revenue Standby travel to come out. Lots of changes in that one. I'm still trying to digest and understand the new procedures.

Have a great holiday. I volunteered to work today so those with families can have time off. Enjoy!

Does this mean that AmTran flights will now be included in the DOT BTS website?

That will be very useful for finding out aircraft registration.

Hey Joe...

Thanks for working turkey day.  Smile I have this one off, but will be there Christmas Day for 10 hours for the same reason you're working Thanksgiving. How are things in Toledo?

That new read/initial on revenue standbys hit us on Monday... that whole GL-660-BAUGHMAN#RFTZ thing takes getting used to. But I noticed if you list a pax #RFTZ as opposed to just #RF that their priority is higher.

And yeah, I just had my hour with the station trainer on the new *PQ and WPNCB#RQ procedures. I know this is supposed to simplify everything, but it's oh-so-hard to unlearn things, yes? I'm still adding *SC to my check-in entries. Heh. Have a good holiday.

As for the previous question, I would imagine, yes, that stats will be available on the DOT website for AmTran flights, as it was the DOT who notified us that we will begin reporting. (This is, however, strictly conjecture on my part.)

Hola...

I really enjoyed working the holiday. We have it very easy compared to our crews who must spend the entire holiday away from their loved ones. I'm sure I'll be around on Christmas, too. 6 months and I'm close to the top of the station seniority list. That's pretty bad. Other than that, things are cooking in Toledo. Life isn't too bad.

The new GL entry I can cope with...it's listing people who miss the flt as an OS on the original flt, long selling SB segments in the lowest fare class, using the INVOL mask to convert segments, and having to void the INVOL if they don't make the STBY flt that drives me nuts. Tell me it won't drive you crazy if you're working the gate and you start to see OSs on your PALL list when the flt is wide open! How are we going to keep the REAL oversales straight?

There has to be a simpler way! I understand the new priority code -- it'll separate our RFs from those we accommodate under the new DOT rules from the likes of National and Vanguard. I'm sure that, in time, all will make sense. Sheesh! It feels like being in initial training all over again.

I'm our station trainer, so I suppose its time to learn ACFS and get busy!

I should get up to MSP on of these days to see how the big boys work  Wink/being sarcastic

Try training the past month on the old stuff and the new stuff....lol...anyways I am excited to see where we are ranking up with everyone. I don't get why our customer complaints are so high. Since the time I've been working at TOL the customer complaints haven't been very high. Most of the complaints I have fielded were on some of our policies. I wonder what it's like in other stations....anyone care to comment?? Well...happy turkey day to everyone and keep up the good work through the tough holiday seasons!!

Last word I got from upper management was that we have been reporting to the DOT since we became a major ('99?) but there is a kind of grace period that the DOT gives carriers before they are released to the public. Kind of a "get your act together" time period. In the september reporting of DOT stats TZ performed very well -
On-Time - #2 behind US Airways - they beat us by less than a percent
Baggage - #5 behind (in rank order) CO,AS,US,WN
DOT Complaints - #4 behind Amer. Eagle,WN,AS

Not too bad if I do say so myself......

727lover - ATA surpassed the 1 billion in revenue mark in 1999 and was designated as "major" carrier by the DOT in 2000.

This year I believe the estimate is to bring in roughly 1.3 billion in revenue.
