AR Goes To Beijing, Not Shanghai; Order 8 Jets

Thu Nov 28, 2002 1:07 pm

According to Xinhua Net's branch in Buenos Aires, Aerolineas Argentinas will start flights between Buenos Aires and Beijing in March or April. This proves Justplanes' report made an error, which reports new AR flights to Shanghai.

The company is evalutating whether to stop at Auckland or Madrid for China flight.

Meanwhile, AR is expected to announce a new order of 8 wide-body aircraft soon.

Beijing still seems like an akward route from Argentina but they will have a stopover so it has a chance, I wouold think Auckland would have more traffic to China than Madrid (but their parent company is based in Madrid- so that has some weight). At the same time there are some routes that should be better- for ex. YYZ, MEX, TLV, and nosntops to CDG, and sure there are more.

Good News!

Well if AR can get traffic rights AKL-PEK I think this would be the best route, 60,000 plus Chinese visit NZ every year and not 1 non stop flight to China not even direct infact! Sounds strange AKL-PEK on AR, aircraft would be an A340-200 I guess.

Wide body aircraft cool I thought they were still getting A340-600's but I heard they were also evaluating the 747-400.

Good to see AR on the up!  Smile

This should turn out to be a very profitable route, and either AKL or MAD would make an excellent choice for a stop-over point. There is also considerable business demand between South America & China as many companies are shifting their manufacturing to China due to the lower production costs & cheap labour and the economic instability in the South American region.

I guess AR will probably start off on a 3 or 4 times per week service before punching it up to a daily service maybe 1/1.5 yrs later after having established the airline on the route.

Do AR have any plans to come to LHR/LGW?

The report was heavily concentrate on the trade between Spain and China too. Since IBERIa has no flights between the 2.

Perhaps AR might fly EZE-MAD-PEK.

Donder10: AR already has flights to LGW with thier MD-88s. The pax go LGW-MAD (MD-88) then onto EZE (742).

With all their feeder-flights to Madrid, they should be able to offer quite good connections from Europe to Beijing, via MAD. And Beijing is probably a more attractive destination in comparison to Shanghai. At least at the moment.

Will they order more A340-600s with this order? It seem at least like a logical choice. Does anyone know where they will fly the A346s when they receive them? I still think Shanghai would be more logical than Beijing, since it's a city that is developing into a business center. Beijing is more of a political center.

If I remember correctly, the Aerolineas Argentinas' (AR) order for the A340-600 has been changed to a A340-300 order partly due to the bad financial situation of AR back then. Now that they are performing better, they might look at the A340-600 again. For now, the A340-600 order has been changed to the smaller A340-300.

I say a flight MAD-PEK or MAD-PVG does not make any economic sense. Otherwise IB or any other Chinese carrier would be exploiting it. I mean, Chinese carriers have shown an impressive growth in rather interesting destinations, but have never considered MAD, much less EZE.

I must support those of you saying there are more demanding destinations to be served by AR before even considering flying to PVG: MEX, CDG, FRA, LAX, BOG

The logical point would be via Madrid, using low-cost structure of AR.

Don't forget that China Eastern is the only carrier flying from Spain to China and I think they have four flights a week (with A340) at the moment. They have been increasing frequency in the recent years so the market between Spain and China might be indeed growing. Forget Argentina, using the low cost crews of AR is the point I think and also give more competition to grow the market where no spanish carrier is exploting.

Perhaps China Eastern would like to consider AKL aswell! There are no direct flights from NZ to China at all. I spose Madrid has the advantage of being AR's European hub with good connections.

How can people say that AR is in $$$$ trouble, since they have a very low cost structure... since the Argentina Peso lost value, they pay their crews, mechanics, airport staff in Argentina three times less than what they paid two years ago. And what they need right now is to get foreign currency in order to support the domestic operations and be profitable. That is why they need to get the CAT I back and start service to more US destinations... I will love to see the new cost structure of AR...

Just to make a comparison, we hired a consulting company from Argentina to do a project in Mexico and the senior consultant told me that a Senior Consultant in Argentina is making $2,000 Argentina Pesos, that will be $600 USD today, $2,000 USD before the devaluation... could you believe it!!

As AR used to code-share with Malaysia Airlines on the EZE-CPT-JNB-KUL service, it would be interesting to see AR operate a EZE-JNB-KUL-PEK - although I doubt they would obtain full-traffic rights on any section of the route!!!

From what I understand, they'll continue with feeding traffic, until there's enough to support the A342.

By the way, I heard that AR is going to get this (but it's just a rumour):

2 Boeing 747-400
3 Airbus A340-300
3 Airbus A340-600
5 Boeing 737-300 (So as to be able to send the MD's to Europe)

But it's just what a friend whose father works at AR told me...

Hi!
Well, seems as AR is now flying high!
Yes, indeed, their costs have gone down a lot since devaluation. International fares have not gone down as much. They have reported a small profit, in the second quarter if i'm not wrong. Javier a friend of mine will be overenjoyed if AR gets a 744.
BTW, are those 733 going to Europe?, because doesn't the MD-83 has problems of noise in the EEU area?
Regards from Argentina,
Matt Vivaldi.

Why would they get 2 744's and 3 346's? Weird mix really.

Hey a round the world flight would be kind of cool, twice weekly in each direction maybe.

Yes indeed, it sounds like a mix. I hope they go for 5 A346 and 3 A343. That's much more logical. But I'd love to see an AR B744 too!!!

By the way, a RTW flight would be kind of interesting!
