Kenia: Belgium Forbids Flights

Thu Nov 28, 2002 9:57 pm

The Belgian Civil Aviation Administration has Sobelair forbidden to fly to Mombasa/Kenya today. Sobelair had charter flight scheduled this morning with the 767 ER 300 OO-SLR and the Administration asked them not to fly.

So all passengers - holidaymakers from touroperator Thomas Cook - are still in Brussels. They will be refund or they can choose another holiday destination.

In my opinion, if the flight would be full there wouldn't be any reason to do so. If people cancel and the load would be poor I would agree. But why do they forbid the flight?

Once again, the Aviation and Tourism Industry will be hit because of a few ill guys running around and also because the media make even more panic out of it than it is.

No, aircraft will not leave Brussels empty. It's not allowed to fly to Mombasa at this moment.

The touroperator plans a flight on saturday night...

Does that mean tourists over there will be stranded for three days and wait till Sunday to fly back home? All other European airlines are also suspending flights to/from Mombasa? Maybe the tour operator down there could reschedule the passengers to fly back to BRU on foreign airlines. I wonder if Sobelair will cut that flight for good.
There is always a mentally ill moron (excuse my language!) doing such thing to get noticed by the press!

As this is a charter flight, it is the touroperator who takes the decision... I just give you here the info given in a pressrelease from touroperator Thomas Cook.

"As this is a charter flight, it is the touroperator who takes the decision"

Not quite, the Aviation Authority can forbid the flight, normally on the advice of the respective Government Foreign Office to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.

Earlier you said that the Belgium Civil Aviation Administration has Sobelair forbidden to fly to Mombasa/Kenya.

Later you say that the Tour Operator takes the decision.

How can the TO take any decision of the Civil Aviation Admin prohibits flights to Kenya? Did I get something wrong?

You haven't understood what I wrote, Swissgabe and Rick.

The Aviation administration has forbidden the flight, but the decision of evacuating the stranded pax away from Kenya with other ailines for example must be made by the touroperator as the charter airline flies on behalf of the touroperator. That was my point.

Pressclub, thanks for justification regarding that.
Yeah, this makes sense. It's the TO/Travel Agent who has to rebook pax on other flights ...

Did the announce any reasons why the flight has been cxld? Just because of security or what? As far as I know no other carriers stopped flights to Kenya, isn't it? Well, Arkia etc might have done.
