Outcome Of PA If Lockerbie Hadn't Happned

Fri Nov 29, 2002 12:09 pm

I was talking with my father tonight and he was saying that Lockerbie was the final nail in the PA coffin. Had the terrorist act not happened, what do you think would have been the future for Pan Am? I did not have an answer for him.

Having worked at PA when all of these events happened, I don't think it would have changed the outcome any - I think we would have continued to spiral downward but it would have been a longer, slower and probably more painful death...

I think it's only a matter of time. Even if there was no Lockerbie, I'm doubtful Pan Am could've survived the big downturn that comes with the Gulf War of 1991.

Actually, the book "Skygods" is an excellent resource. A leaner Pan Am had a slight resurgence in 1988 (and had actually hired pilots for the first time since the late 60s) but the loads took a dive after the explosion. Ultimately, they would have suffered the same fate: you can't have an international operation without a local feed (which Pan Am was woefully lacking).
