New Boeing Line

Sun Dec 01, 2002 4:21 am

For what many are calling the "Super-Efficent" Boeing jet, which will probably be called the 787 (Lucky Asia 8), I think it should be a Boeing replica of the 330. 2-4-2 in Coach, 2-2-2 in Biz and a more spacious 2-1-2 or 1-2-1 in First.
Its interesting because current operators have a 2-2-2 first and 2-2-2 biz, with just a legroom difference. The 330 is narrower than the 777 but a lot of 777 operators have done away with the 2-2-2 Boeing configuration, and put in the 1-2-1.
Additionally, they should keep the raked wingtips instead of the regular winglets. LD-3 containers should be able to fit. Cockpit should have commanality with the 777 line to have more competition and help airlines (such as CX or AF) who already have 777s, go away from the 330 and to the 787.
Anything else which should be added? Comments are welcome.

Flight International magazine's depiction indeed showed an aircraft with raked wingtips and said that the cross-section would be wider than that of the 767 so it's a good bet Boeing will make sure LD-3 containers do fit. As much commonality as possible with the 777 should be sought but it sounds as though the cross-section will be smaller. FI didn't mention possible seating configurations. Fly-by-wire is a must and I hope Boeing begins the transition from hydraulics to electrics with this one. Much more extensive use of composites and new, lightweight alloys is a given, since weight reduction is needed to help achieve the targeted 20% lower fuel-burn. A range and capacity choice above and below that of the 7500nm baseline aircraft is probably desireable but Boeing must be careful about treading too closely to 777 territory. This aircraft is probably largely intended to replace the 767 (and perhaps 757) so Boeing probably isn't too concerned with intrusion into their classes.
