It's not that they don't know the difference between an Aeroflot 767 and a USAir A321, but that they don't care.
It's an airline story, so they simply pulled an airliner file photo. Their attitude is that any photo showing an airliner will do because it wasn't the airliner, nor the airline, that made news. It was the sick passenger on an airline flight. Lacking a photo of the plane itself, or the sick passenger, they opt for a generic airline file photo. Maybe they use the Aeroflot 767 for every generic airline story like this one. That's the extent to which they care about what photo they use.
But does the public care about the plane in the photo? Probably not.
