More Flights To India Needed.

Sun Dec 01, 2002 5:01 pm

Here is an article I found in the economic times in India.

It looks like flying to India is getting hard.
I guess no matter how much airlines are wanting to expand to India and airlines wanting to start flights there it seems like there are not enough seats to India especially for people flying to India from the west coast. People flying from the west coast of the US only have Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Korean Air and maybe Korean Air. China Airlines just started A300-600 flights to Delhi from Taipei but that is the least choice of airlines people would fly with to India.

I am hoping once SIA start non-stop flights to Singapore it will easier and faster to get to India since you could fly to all of India's major cities non-stop from Singapore now or when Emirates starts flights to SFO it could be easy to connect in DXB. It is going to take AI years to start non-stop flights to India.  Sad

It is going to take AI years to start non-stop flights to India.

AI has stated very categorically that there is ABSOLUTELY NO PLAN to start nonstop flights between India and North America, except as a competitive response. As long as AI has unused fifth freedom frequencies between the US/Canada and Europe/North Asia in viable city pairs, they will continue to utilize one-stop routings. Once AI has utilized all of these (and that wont happen for a long time to come), then only will nonstops be even considered.

How come United Airlines and Canada 3000 were going to start non-stop flighst to India from North America before 9-11?

Personally I am happy with flying through SIN, KUL,NRT,HKG or DXB we have the choice to stop in the world's best airports. I don't mind the one-stop flights to India. Non-stop from North America to India is too long of a flight.

I think the financial health of those two airlines today compared to the financial health of Air India should tell you all you need to know about which one had the right idea.

So Air India is in the pink of health??With QR starting services all over the place and discounting fares and with it only being a matter of time before they start to US , Air India is going to find it hard to hold on to the market.
And with EK also getting 380s as wll as linking up the US market, the financial health of Air India may soon be like the performace of the English cricket team!

Well Canada 3000's flight from Vancouver or Toronto to New Delhi - on a polar route - was supposed to be a record 14 hours flight between North America and India ! ! !
At the time C3 was also planing on a Canada-Mumbai route via London UK - short refueling stop only, that would have taken them 17 hours.

A large percentage of Indians based in Canada have demanded for direct connecting flights to the city of Amritsar. Amritsar appears to be the place of origin for most Punjabi residents in Canada ! ! !

Even as we speak a similar flight from anywhere in Canada to India on any carrier combination will take you at least . . . 22 grueling hours.

Lots of reasons IMHO for other airlines to fly a nonstop route to India.

To bad C3 went down shortly after 9/11.

I'm flying YUL-AMS-DEL on KLM this week and my total travel time will be just over 17 hours - nowhere near your 22 hour prediction.

I have no clue! I'm gonna be there for business, so I spend most of the time downtown.

Not very large. Most immigrants who go to Montreal are from former French-speaking colonies, which is why you see a lot of North and West Africans.

Are you sure about Edmonton? I grew up there. There's a sizable Indian community in Millwoods, but it's not THAT big! Toronto and VancouveR? Yeah...

Yea I think the Seattle community is bigger than Edmonton. I go up to Vancouver a lot and have a lot of Indian friends up there and they always talk about there is a lot of Indians up there. So with Edmonton I am just going off what I heard.

I do agree with connector4you, Vancouver's Indians are mostly Punjabi.

Well, just because the Indian community in X, Y, or Z demands non-stop flights to Amritsar, or because some idiotic Minister demands flights from Patna or what have you, doesn't mean that they are going to get them. The Indian diaspora is pretty spread out all over North America with concentrations in some metro areas, but an effective hub and spoke system can accomodate their demands quite easily.

I think you heard wrong about Edmonton. There are some Indians there, but not a huge amount. I think even Calgary has more than Edmonton. But anyways, Edmonton's Indian population is mostly concentrated in Millwoods. Calgary's is more spread out.

Actually, I hear from a very reliable source that once weekly Patna-Kathmandu flights are a virtual certainty in 2003 using Alliance Air 737s.

I thought they had Patna-Kathmandu flights. Some time way back in the early 80s I flew that very route (KTM-Patna) because flights into Delhi were cancelled because of fog. In any case, as soon as we landed the customs staff at the ramshackled patna airport descended upon us like vultures on carrion trying to strip everything off our bodies and our luggage. My family and I had made no purchases of western goods in Nepal so we were let off easy, but I still remember how corrupt those officials were.

I did read somewhere that some minister was grumbling that Patna had no direct flights to Dubai. Hopefully, AI won't have to put a 747 on that route to appease some dimwit.

Well I guess it depends on where you live in North America and what's your final destination to India. If you live on the west coast it doesn't come too cheap (money and time) to connect onto an east coast, European or Asian hub first.

And so I personally think that an 14 hours trans-polar flight makes more economic sense to both airliners and travelers. This route have the potential of a "win-win situation" for the right airline.

There are about 40,000 Indian people in Montreal, not comparable to Vancouver or Toronto in this regard.

I will say that India is way underserved, its probably about 100 times harder to get a seat to anywhere in India then it is to Hawaii during the summer.

It was so fun to get the people calling about a month before December saying they needed to book an open return ticket to Calcutta for Dec 10. Well I had the pleasure of saying "Sir/Maam, I am sorry but I cannot get you to Calcutta on December 10th, it looks like the soonest I could get you confirmed seats all the way through would be APRIL 10th of next year".

So many poor people got screwed sideways with their open return tickets, there would be no seats available for months on end and their tickets would expire and they would be forced to buy new tickets.

Or when I would get silly americans who would gawk at a $1500 R/T ORD-BOM-ORD.

I loved working at British Airways

Is there any plane with the range to get to India? I mean that place is on the other side of the friggin' planet, it's like 20,000km! It'd be expensive to service that right?

Canada 3000 did operate a few flights to India from YYZ non stop to DEL. They were to start YVR also but they went under before it could commence. If I remeber correctly it was with a 340.

AFAIK, they operated one flight YVR-DEL before they met their premature end. The YYZ-DEL, while scheduled, never actually operated. I'm sure someone knows the true story, but it was less than 1 week of actual operations.

CI is upgrading the current AB6 flight to Delhi to a larger 343 next summer.

Looks like TPE-DEL is doing good.
